Who here does and doesn't carbon dose? Thinking I might try it. Supposedly there's no cons, only benefits. Just so happens I have a spare head on a fancy doser somebody sent me :smirking-face:

Nothing we do in reefing has no cons...

Pros: can lower Nitrate and Phosphate, can act as flocculant to increase water clarity, feeds bacteria to feed corals

Cons: can crash Phosphate and Nitrate potentially allowing dinos, if you use short chain carbons can increase potential for algae

That said, I think with due caution carbon dosing can be very beneficial.

My Walgreens has a UPS drop off location. Climate controlled is the better option for those of us living in the middle of a desert.

Our grocery store has one too.
Gets pretty cold here, sometimes 20 below so you can drop it off there so it won't freeze, the opposite of you Tim.
I think it's super cool. :cool:

wheww what a day. i still see worm movement so im hopeful that i havent killed them all... yet!
my corals still look grumpy so getting ready for a water change.
and my stupid hippo tang is tearing stuff up! im so over him! he is always yanking plugs out of the frag holders and throwing them everywhere! i wish i could get rid of him!
and the other cbb died....:'(

I've dosed vinegar before. Didn't like it so I stopped.

Sugar, vinegar, vodka. Dosage depends on what you're trying to do and what you use.

The basic idea is to feed bacteria that eat Phosphate and then the bacteria are eaten by the coral which is a much more effective way for coral to get the phosphates they require for growth.

Vodka or Vinegar are short chain carbon sources (sugars) they work well but the same carbon is easily used by algae and cyanobacteria as well so feeding one feeds the other.

I rarely carbon dose but when I do I use Tropic Marin Reef Activ. They have other mixes that add or remove some Nitrate/Phosphate while carbon dosing and a few more. There are products from other companies but I've never used them. I used to dose Vodka occasionally but I found it too easy to screw up.

The flocculant aspect is very minor if at all, not like marine snow. It is merely that some particles can gather enough mass to fall out of suspension and settle or get swept up into the filtration.

As simple as vodka or white distilled vinegar or there's also specific additives on the market (which i haven't fully researched) that are long chain carbon sources like @tharbin had mentioned using to avoid algae! I think @Miami Reef Has a good write up about it somewhere

I've dosed vodka, vinegar and a combination of both.
I've also dosed table sugar.
Vodka will promote cyno, vinegar will drop ph drastically it dosed all at once so a doser is good.
The acetate in both of those is used by corals and bacteria.
If you overdose, you can easily rob your tank of oxygen.
You can have bacterial blooms as well.
It will reduce nitrate.
That is a fact.
Not so much for phosphate but you have to have both for it to work.
Table sugar worked great but cyno was bad.
My yellow tang breaks out in red lesions all over it's body about 2 weeks into dosing for me so I don't do it anymore.
Works well on fowler tanks and many, many people have success and there are many threads on it.

Makes sense that the video I saw that said no cons was a BRS videos with the guy from Tropic Marin probably just trying to sell a product haha
