What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
@tbrown I don't know if you realize this, but you're the monti guy. Why? Well, you have montis and you're a guy.
No seriously brother, your montis look great and I know you have an affinity for them. I have my digis going crazy and I added that cool little grafted monti cap that we talked about.
But my question is about the encrusters. I have a JF beach bum and today diyreefer sent me a freebie frag of tyree sunset with my order. Ive been told in my smaller tank, with a small aquascape, that these guys will cover everything in a year and will basically just grow over everything. I think they're beautiful and I know they'll spread, but if I use them as fillers or pops of color on plain empty rock, do you think ill have a tank with only two montis?

What has been your experience with encrusting montis. I realize it's late, you dont have to answer that tonight lol

John, I know the question wasn’t directed at me but…keep that sunset monti away from your main rock work at all costs lol!

In my experience they grow fast and do a great job of covering up empty real estate and sometimes even real estate that’s taken.

The Beach Bum is a much slower grower (at least for me) so it’s a safer bet on your main structure.

I always put the encrusters down low and since I run bare bottom usually on the acrylic.

Here is a tropicana monti on its own rock at the bottom of the tank.

Middle right of the pic is Aquaman Monti and front right is ORA Melonberry. Both directly on the acrylic bottom.

Maybe the nicotine got to her. It wouldve been concentrated in a cigarette butt. Idk Joel, let her sleep and observe?
That's what I think too but they're freaking out and on their way out of town.
Nothing I say can calm them down so I'll just have to wait and see.
Last call was just a bunch of upsetness so hopefully puppy will pull through.
From what I'm reading, from her symptoms at least I think she injested quite a bit of nicotine, or something else maybe...

Good God man, you have some cool old growth going. Hats off that is superb! I got you man, that's what I was worried about. I could see these guys growing over my anacropora or small lps and that scares me. Thanks Andre, I always value your opinion brother. Thank you for sharing because I was about to mess up

It seems like nicotine would stimulate her and not make her lethargic. Pups are resilient, but im sorry you're going through this.

I used aptasia x at one point trying to hold back some encrusting monti from overtaking other corals. Once it gets going it’s hard to stop and wins a lot of the coral battles.

My experience has been that they either spread fast or they spread slow. I've got two Superman Monti frags and a Rainbow Monti frag that are frags. No bigger than the plug. The Rainbow has been with me for about 3 years. I've killed it 5 or 6 times and it survived. The Superman frags have been with me for 2-3 years. It spread fast, then I made it into 2 frags and it stopped spreading.

I had a Cherry Tree or similar that went CRAZY and started encrusting and plating - Monti Eating nudis ate it.

I've got an Orange cap with green polyps that's dying and a black/purple with green polyps that's died and came back 3 or 4 times. I've got a TSA Megachrome that is encrusting like crazy and taking over my frag rack currently.

My Beach Bum never did anything and then Monti Eating nudis ate it. My Mystic Sunset was encrusting a lot before the Monti Eating nudis ate it.

They'll either go crazy, go slow, or do nothing.

You are right John.
First symptom is excitability then the drowsy I guess.
I know only what I read online.

Oh heck no! Yeah I'm glad I asked. Backwall maybe?

I also got monti eating nudis in my last tank…those things are evil.

I hope the pup is ok. I love dogs, generally more than people.

I dunno... I heard people taste good today.

But did you know that it's illegal to eat the flesh of another person in Idaho???? Apparently it .makes you guilty of cannibalism.
