Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
I will send a pic you what I use and what was recommended by Randy Holmes and numerous others over on his Chemistry forum.
The urea looks like pellets, it should be a fine, granulated power almost like sugar.
You want ammonium BICARBONATE, not chloride
and sodium phosphate, not diphosphate.

You can use what you have for plant fertilizer as that's what you have is used for, except the Dr. Tims. I think it was mentioned to not use ammonium chloride unless for cycling a tank due to the chloride messes with either the calcium levels or the alk... I can't remember which

What are you feeding exactly ? These are amazing.

thanks, always learning
I will do a write up for what I feed and post it up for the Smorgs.

Good morning, everyone! Hope everyone is off to a good week. I'm definitely dragging after all the business of the last several weeks, but I'm still blessed! Happy Monday, friends.

Good morning Alycia!

So there is a job going to be opening up for the county I work for come December/January that I really want working in HR. One of the ladies that is in HR has become a friend of mine and she really wants me to come work with her. If I get it, it would mean a pretty good increase in pay. If I get it and they will let me I think I'm going to setup a small saltwater tank in my office instead of the freshwater one I have in my current office. I'm thinking some really pretty designer clowns and bubble tip anemones and RFAs and one of the baby's from my devils hand coral. This is the tank I'm thinking about do you guys think it will work?

Looks good. Can you find any reviews? Like the skimmer

Brother, when I switched to ammonium, urea and sodium phosphate ALL my corals perked up and really started growing. The corals can use the ammonium and urea directly without having to convert other nitrogen sources.

BOTH coral cells and zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium) can import ammonia/ammonium. Once in the coral cell or zooxanthellae, ammonia/ammonium can be directly utilized for amino acid synthesis (specifically to make glutamate).

BOTH coral cells and zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium), can IMPORT nitrate. Once nitrate is imported into the coral cell, however, it CANNOT be directly utilized for amino acid synthesis. Corals cells lack the enzymatic machinery to utilize nitrate for amino acid synthesis.

Here's where the magic comes in: the zooxanthella absorbs the imported nitrate from within the coral cell (which can't use it). Once imported into the zooxanthella, the nitrate is converted into ammonium (zooxanthellae DO have the enzymatic machinery to do this). Once converted into ammonium in the zooxanthellae, it is utilized to make amino acids. Whatever excess amino acids that are produced in the zooxanthella are then FED BACK to the coral cell. The coral cell can thereafter use these amino acids to build new proteins and grow. Essentially, the coral cell feeds the zooxanthella nitrate (just like you would fertilize a tomato plant) and then harvests amino acids (the tomatoes) that its zooxanthella produces.
I'm definitely saving this, so I can just copy and paste it when I'm trying to explain why I use these products lol. What's really cool is that I'm showing no rise , whatsoever in nitrates since dosing. I'm not using a scant amount either, it's the recommended dose for my tank. This tells me that the corals are consuming it before it even has the chance to convert to N03. If that's happening, then the corals had to be almost starving before I started dosing it.

I haven't begun dosing sodium phosphate yet, because my P04 is usually very steady at .2 to .3. I may have to up NH4HC03 if nitrates stay very low.
