Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
All this magnesium talk... I test my magnesium off and on (once or twice every two or three years?) and what I've found is usually the algae growth seems somewhat stunted when magnesium is higher.

Is it scientific? Of course not! Do I look like a scientist? Is it proven? Nope! But currently my magnesium is on the lower side and I have higher algae growth in the tank.

What are my plans? Beats me! Probably clean my dosing containers for the first time in the 3 years I've had them. Clean the dosing tubes. Start dosing again. And I'll probably add a little extra magnesium a couple of times a month if I remember.
John came to the same conclusion about algae and magnesium.

Last I tested my mag, it held 15 with one in the chamber... oh.. wait.. the metal magnesium. Carry on

I don't think is anecdotal Tim. I've read that from several other members as well, especially people running scrubbers needing to supplement more mag and trace elements to support scrubber growth rather that in the DT.
I'm with you, I have a Hannah mag tester that's still shrink wrapped in the box. I did use a Salifert titration kit once since the reviews on the Hannah were all over the place.
I rarely test Mg, maybe once a year. I use the AquaForest kit. I like to have the Mg in the 1400-1500 range and I can see when it dips below about 1100 as the algae takes off. Right now my Mg is low but I'm just maintaining things while I work on other issues.

So the consensus seems to be magnets leaching into the water column and low magnesium are common causes for algae growth. I'm going to assume with the magnesium it has something to do with corals not uptaking as much phosphates and nitrates because their growth is going to be stunted somewhat from the imbalance of alkalinity/calcium/alkalinity potentially (see science stuff?) and the magnets causes a high iron which can potentially stunt coral growth and cause browning tissue and also increases algae growth because algae loves iron.

Good afternoon everyone. Just woke at noon for what I thought was going to be a short sec. Jon I’ll try to be more energetic tonight. I’m about try to get some more sleep and yep, last night was my Monday. I’ll .stop by again later, just starting fade out , so I’ll say I bid you adieu for now.
I love your jams. Whatever mood you're in bring it! It was Amanda that blatantly and clearly hated the music. So sad 😞

Is the Aquaforest a titration like the Salifert? I think I have that right..it may not be Salifert. That tells you how often I've used it.

Sounds good to me. Low Mg does stunt coral growth and algae does love to suck iron but then if I'm remembering correctly, Gonis also love Iron along with Mn. Maybe Gonis really are flowerpot corals after all, just fancy algae.

BTW, don't mix Brightwell and Fritz RPM Mg in the same container even though they are the same mixture, but different concentrations (I think it was the Brightwell with the higher concentration). They're both clear but combine cloudy. I'd dump it if I had another container of Brightwell.

So we can safely say 'Tim Says to avoid magnets and add lots of Mg, unless you like Gonis, then magnets are okay'?

Fixed it for ya

That is such a good song! I could put that one on repeat
It was on repeat, well played over and over as my record player didn't have looping, when it was released for months.

Yes, straight titration. Years ago BRS, tested Mg test kits and AquaForest was the one they deemed most accurate. Hanna's wasn't out yet. I think Salifert was close but I wanted to give AquaForest a try. I still use it. I know the Hanna unit went through a rough baptism. I prefer titration as I usually find it easier to interpret than the shade-of-color methods. For those I go Hanna now.

John came to the same conclusion about algae and magnesium.
It's like clock work. I've talked to some of the big successful coral farms and importers and they always say high mag for algae control. If mag is extremely low, it won't allow the corals to up take what they need to from the water column and can lead to chemical precipitation.
