So I’m posting my 100 gallon tank that I bought used with custom stand that we customized even more. As of this post the tank has been up for 72 days. Equipment is a work in progress and I’ll post next.

Tank start date : 09/26/20
Fully Cycled : 10/09/20 (used Dr Tim’s method for cycling... worked like a champ)
First Inhabitants added : 10/09/20 (2 Ocellaris Clown Fish)

Equipment:

Lights - 3 Kessil A360WE Tuna Blue - Used - 3rd light was purchased and mounted Aug of 2021
Sump - Eshopps RS-75 (1st Gen) with matching OverFlow - used
Pump - Jebao DCP-3500 - new
Skimmer - HOB Bubble-Magus E5 - used
UV Sterlizer - SunSun JUP-01 - new - removed 02/01/21
Flow - 2 SunSun JVP-130 - new - removed 03/15/21 - added Jebao SCP-120 DC gyre - new - 03/15/21
Heater - 1 Hydor and 1 Marineland - used - Hydor removed because it stopped working - 02/01/21 - Marineland stopped working 07/18/21 - replaced with 300 watt Eheim heater 07/18/21 - beginning of tank crash
Filtration - Bioballs, Ceramic bio-rings, sponge filter from previous Aquaclear 75 that was being used (fit the sump perfectly actually), filter sock and seperate sponge filter separating compartment in sump, 4” sand and gravel and dry rock in display. - Bioballs removed 05/21 - added 2 bags of Chemi-Pure Elite 11.74 oz on 08/06/21 in response to tank crash - Chemi-pure removed after adding media reactor
Refugium - Skimmer section of sump with Luxbird light, light fixture with mount, cheatomorpha algae - added 12/12/20 - bought some more Chaeto that came with some pods - 12/26/20 - moved 1 SunSun JVP-130 to the Refugium area of sump to start tumbling Chaeto - 03/15/21 - removed Luxbird light and replaced with Kessil H80 - 03/18/21 - removed SunSun since tumbling stopped working after getting so big
RO/DI 100 GPD unit from Puratek- added 08/03/21 due to tank crash
Purigen bag in sump - added 08/18/21
Single BRS Media Reactor with a mix of 2/3 Rox Carbon and 1/3 GFO hooked up to a Sicce pump - added 08/21/21
Carbon dosing with RedSea NoPox for Nitrate reduction 8/27 - in combo with GFO, this, along with using RODI, has brought down my nitrates from 60 ppm to 10 ppm and dropping

Future Equipment:

Bigger sump to accommodate a skimmer (current skimmer chamber is being used as a refugium)
A standard non-HOB skimmer. I’m tired of skimmer going crazy and getting on the floor. Wife is super not happy with that. With it in the sump, it will at least just go back in the water.

All this was pieced together. Took a few months before I started the tank up. Yes it’s a combo of used and cheap new. So far so good for me.

So, as I been leaving the light on for the Astreopora, I’ve gotten in the ugly phase. I’ve now introduced 3 new inhabitants. 3 Trochus snails. Probably not enough but I wanted to try it out. I also picked up (and cleaned as well as I could) some Chaeto. Nutrient export reasons. Let’s see how it goes with the light and snails.

Diatom phase is going away and it seems I’m starting to enter the green algae stage. Let’s see if the Trochus snails can keep up.

New picture. Again, diatoms are going away and green algae is taking its place. Oh, and I added a piece of live rock from my LFS. Removed 3 Asterina Starfish, 3 Ball Anemone, and 2 bubble Algae from it. It has a bunch of coralline algae on it so I’m hoping to seed my tank with it.

So I went a bit crazy these past couple of days. I bought 2 Zoa frags with around 3 or 4 heads, 1 GSP frag, 1 Mushroom frag, 1 Candy Cane with 2 heads, and I just bought 2 frags from WWC which would be Starburst Cap Monti and a Purple Polyp Birdsnest. Also bought a Yellow Tang and a Flame Fin Tomini Tang, Pincushion Urchin and 5 Mexican Red Leg Hermits. Probably not good that I got them all around the same time. My vacation is ending soon and I wanted to get the stuff set up before I go back to work next week.

Candy cane doesn’t seem to be happy right now. Not as open as it was. Been adding phyto to the tank and dosing vita-chem so maybe those changes could be affecting it?

Birds nest looks good though

So the pincushion urchin died. It’s my fault so I take full responsibility. It was my wife’s favorite in the tank, too. Tank was not ready for it yet. For the past 4 days I tried feeding nori but it wouldn’t take it. I knew then that it was a goner. Should have asked of someone in the community with a more established tank wanted to hold her for me (we named it Rosy which is the reason for calling it she). :-( . Will try again a few months later and see if I can keep one then. Maybe once I have a lot of coralline algae.

Coralline algae is starting to show up everywhere! Got little specs showing up on the rocks, overflow, powerheads, etc... exciting times

Pulled out the live rock last night to take off a vermitid snail only to find 2 more on that rock. This was the small live rock I bought to seed my tank with Corraline Algae. Luckily it was in the sand bed, not touching anything else but I believe I might end up finding other vermitids eventually.
On another note, I bought some Reef Roids, AF Build, AF Vitality, AF Amino Mix, SA Live Marine Phytoplankton, and a long coral feeder. Using that stuff to target feed my coral, especially the Trumpet/Candy Cane. Looks better now.
