1000 gallon tank for a beginner!

Tank is doing well. Since my last update I took a few videos of the current tank inhabitants.

I got tired of making no headway with the huge amount of GHA and dosed the tank with fluconazole. Every bit of the algae has died. I am quite impressed at how well it worked. I recently got in the tank and cleaned all the algae off the rockscape. I know it's just a matter of time before it returns but should hopefully have the inhabitants to help care for it.

I also started up my refugium with some chaeto as well to help.

And yes, the tangs have arrived!

I have received a purple, yellow, powder brown, powder blue, regal, and white tail bristletooth tang along with a one spot foxface. I was supposed to also get a tomini tang but he apparently didn't pass final inspection. I'm not sure exactly what I will do with the final tang as I was hoping to put them all into the main tank at the same time to help with aggression.

Currently, I have never met such dramatic fish. They all are far more scared of me than any of the other fish I have put in my tanks. I never get to see if they are eating well since they all run and hide whenever I come over to inspect them!

Nice!
Time will help with the Tangs maybe not all of them. My Tang goes from being fearless of me and taking Nori out of my hand to hiding when I approach and back to begging a few minutes later . Hes been with me for a little over a year. Mimic Tang.

Nice. Hopefully your CUC can keep it at bay. I am always surprised by how finicky tangs are when first being introduced considering how mean they can get later. Once acclimated though they will always be the stars of the tank.

I have not read every page, but I am sure it has been mentioned. You can do a lights out period in your system to help with the algae issue. It seems that you haven’t put any corals in yet and this won’t affect the fish. Also gives time for beneficial bacteria to colonize the rock surface. Secondly, depending on your lights, many have the ability to program an acclimation time period. You could program a start of 10% of your desired 100% and spread the ramp up time over several weeks.

I moved the tangs into the main tank 5 days ago. Everything has been going well with them until today. I couldn't find my yellow tang when I came home and after searching discovered he was hiding up by one of my overflows. I carefully fished him out just to watch the purple tang proceed to beat the hell out of him. In hindsight I wish I had put him in my acclimation tank to give him a break.

I climbed in and attempted to get the purple tang to no avail. Now that they're both back in the tank the purple is obsessed with only killing the yellow and doesn't do anything else. The yellow is currently hiding behind a gyre and every time the purple comes close to attack I scare him away but he comes right back.

I have already printed pictures of both purple and yellow tangs and placed them on the tank though you really can't see well through the thick acrylic. It isn't doing anything. Don't have small mirrors to hang unfortunately. I'm currently printing off some 3d decoys on my printer in the hopes I can drop them in and help spread aggression.

I had hoped placing everyone into the big tank at once would help prevent this even with the purple's known reputation of aggression.

Any other ideas? If I can wrangle the yellow again I will get him out but I'm not sure he will go back up to the top again to allow for it. There's just too much room and hiding places otherwise to scoop either fish.

Should I be looking at adding multiple Yellows to spread things out more or is that just a more expensive loss waiting to happen?

Head to Walmart and buy a few hand mirrors. They really do work for tangs.

Love seeing your tank come along, a massive endeavor!

Main concern is you really can't see well through the acrylic unless you are up against it. Nonetheless I think I'll go get some to try it out.

Do you have corals or can you turn the lights off for a bit?
No corals. I can turn the lights off. But now I have this:

OK he has definitely found the reflection which has him quite occupied. I found the yellow tang once after returning with mirrors but he has disappeared since then.

Glad to hear it! Just let him tire himself out on the mirror for a while. I think I left my mirror up for 2 days when dealing with my yellow tangs aggression? Once I took it down, didn't seem to care about my hippo anymore. Just glad that other yellow was gone...it had some amazing moves! 🤣

That was a while ago, now the hippo is the boss of the tank!

Hey, I have a little experience with getting tangs in one tank, i had Achilles, powder blue and powder brown, and it was a hell for them in 400 gallon tank. I had to rehome both blue and brown. And kept Achilles, during the same time, I got 2 purple tangs and 3 yellow tangs, and one gem tang, all medium size, like 2" all got along well in my tank, they are now 5-7" i also have hippo and blonde naso tangs, like 8-9" in size, they just mind their own business,

My advice to you, is get that yellow out for now, and order 2 or more yellow tangs, them put them all in at same time, purple will be confused and not chase same yellow, and pretty soon will stop the chase.

If the yellow corners himself in a bad spot I'll pull him out but otherwise I won't be able to catch him. I now have 4 decoys in the tank that I have 3d printed along with 5 mirrors to keep the purple occupied. Hopefully that will give the yellow a break and a chance to heal up.

Has this seemed to help. I have a purple that will eventually be going into my 240 with another tang that I was hoping the size of the tank and introducing them at the same time would help but if you are having issues in your tank I feel like I'm just screwed lol.

If you want mirrors INSIDE the tank, underwater, and are afraid of them getting wet. Just vacuum pack them. Seal-a-meal style.

It worked the first night but the purple isn't phased by it anymore.i have 3d printed decoys of similar size and it isn't doing anything either. I went looking for the yellow last night after lights out in the hopes that I could surprise him and scoop him up. Instead I found him down next to the purple tang for the night. Go figure.

Come morning and the yellow is isolated again. The purple isn't as constantly aggressive with him but still charges over randomly and attacks. Even though there's not as much harassment it is still preventing the yellow from eating and I worry about him starving slowly now.
