This thread is waaaay overdue for an update...

We had a partial tank crash back around the time I took a little break from the forums. Not sure exactly what caused it, as the only culprits we were able to pinpoint were a temporary alk swing, and a tiny bit of rust inside an algae clip magnet. We have young kids, so it’s possible somebody put something in the tank or sump undetected. But nonetheless, we lost both tangs and probably 65% of our SPS.

After several large water changes and a few poly filters, things stabilized. We added a bit more live rock and a regal angel (finally found one that eats everything in sight).... but besides that we cut back to manual dosing and have just kind of been cruising along as-is.

I did end up selling our rhomboid fairy wrasse. At the time, I had reasoned out that eventually I would like to try another lineatus and maybe a couple other fairy wrasses and he was so abnormally dominant for his species that I wasn’t sure he would tolerate adding any others.

Now, I regret it. It’s made worse by the fact that the person we sold him to let him jump out of the tank, which is a colossal waste considering everything I’d gone through to get him healthy and thriving like he was.

We also recently “adopted” a moyers leopard wrasse from a fellow reefer that tried a pair and ended up with two sparring males. He’s been hiding since we added him to the display, nearly a month now, so I have a feeling our current leopards or the yellow are not being very hospitable. He moves from spot to spot (we can find him by looking under the tank), but never out when the lights are on. If he doesn’t come out soon, he will be re-located to another tank that’s tied into the new frag system that only currently houses some BTAs and a pair of percula clowns.

Anyway, we are in the process of setting up the frag tank and hopefully beginning to replace some of the corals and fish that were lost. So, I should have some better updates to come- and pictures of course ;)

Have a fun new QT addition. I know they have been pretty common lately, but I’ve wanted one since I first read the reef builders article and they were still being referred to as cf. lanceolatus... so I’m pretty excited.

Pretty guy, definitely has flukes so that will be the first thing addressed. Wish me luck in getting him to the DT!

Got some nice pictures of ms. Mandy tonight. Usually, she’s quite camera-shy and as soon as my phone approaches the glass she’s off into the rocks. For whatever reason, she had beef with her reflection in the front glass tonight so I was able to get closer than I usually can lol.

It may have been the change in lights. We picked up an ATI power module, used, to swap out with the old halide-T5 combo fixture we were using.

We had the radions going for a quite a while... but just weren’t getting the colors we had before with T5 or halides. They were older too, so it could be the pucks were due for replacement. Either way, the Mandy has always been particular about lighting changes [emoji23]

Ok- I was reluctant to add current full tank pictures, because I feel like it’s so empty at this point after losing so many SPS colonies... but I guess I won’t see the progress from this point on if I don’t [emoji12]

This is one of my favorite pieces that survived. It’s a PC rainbow. Under LEDs it was completely green with red-ish polyps. Under halides/T5s, it morphed into this beauty. I’m curious how it will change now with strictly T5.

And you can see that the torch wasn’t phased by whatever it was that caused the partial-crash [emoji23]

Not much to report... cruising through with just kalk or 2-part, regular water changes, and feeding the fish.

Been lazy about cleaning the back glass and my H likes it "dirty", so he won't clean it when he does maintenance lol

But, here we are December 17'

Gorgeous reef!!! Love all the wrasses!!

Thanks! I really regret selling my rhomboid though... can’t wait to get the pintail out of QT. I might try to pick-up one more fairy wrasse as well, to kind of break up the introduction aggression. We haven’t really added many new fish recently.

Why did you sell the rhomboid? He was so gorgeous!? Your pintail look amazing! Mine was a eating machine and he eat way to much lol I just read that over eating can couse bladder problems...
ps. Should i premix the salt with tank water?

He was! He was on the aggressive side, which is atypical for rhomboids, but I wanted to try to add other wrasses eventually and didn’t think he would tolerate them. My H and I really want another lineatus especially, and pretty sure he killed the first one :(

And, it wouldn’t hurt to dissolve it in a cup of tank water, make it a bit easier to distribute.

You should totally get another rhomboids and lineatus and after release the pin tail from quarantine, put those together to quarantine... Pintail are so peaceful... Mine is still alive, but after seeing him every night floating all over the tank, sucked by overflow, trying to go down to sleep in rocks, Im in schock that he is still alive...

Looking very nice, great pics of the mandy. :)

Thank you!

I had a bit of a scare this morning. Went to feed the pintail in QT, and couldn’t find him anywhere [emoji15]. Even though the tank is covered, I start frantically searching around and behind it. Keep in mind, I have three dogs...so when I didn’t find the body I think “surely, he squeezed out somehow overnight and one of the dogs ate him”.

My husband stopped by in-between work errands, and I told him the bad news. So, he went to look for himself...and comes out, laughing.

We have an in-tank filter that we are only using to hold a sponge that was seeded from the sump of our display. The filter isn’t even running right now. Apparently, Mr. wrasse decided this was a nice place to hangout [emoji23]. I took some video while feeding.

PSA. Live aquaria has a bunch of female fairy wrasses listed at really good prices right now. I may or may not have just purchased a female lineatus to QT with my pintail... [emoji56]

Lovely tank.
How did you treat the wrasse against flukes?

That is a funny how he made the filter his home.

I used general cure, but since I have more fish coming now... [emoji56] I’m going to wait and do two more doses with all, rather than finish his treatment right now. I’ll be treating them with CP as well.

QT is getting busy...saw signs of ich so started CP over the weekend. After two weeks, I’ll transfer them to a new QT and start GC.

Everyone looks pretty good though:

Those a pretty fish.
Do they all eat well?
Can you tell more about how you prepare they for feeding? Do you feed frozen, pellets, flakes,...?

All the fish in the display eat well. I feed mostly NLS pellets, frozen mysis and spirulina brine, algae sheets, and sometimes live black worms.

In QT, the pintail eats everything. Lineatus has only really been eating black worms, and the copperband just sort of picks at the mysis. I think they will perk up a bit more after the CP is done. I’m going to sacrifice some live rock and get the copperband eating a bit more, before starting the general cure.
