Hey, I know we've got some computer geeks on here. :p

I'm looking to buy a couple 14" laptops for my nieces before they start college next month. If anyone sees a good deal online, I'd appreciate knowing about it. ;)

That's really nice of you! Your best bet would be to either stalk slickdeals.com or go to best buy with her. I'm not typically a fan of best buy but she's eligible for some pretty good deals since she's in college. Swappa.com for a used laptop might also be helpful.

What the heck? Any interest in adoption? You're in the vast minority of persons in America having that conversation with a teenager. 13.3" Macbook is where it's at.

If you don't mind a little work these laptops are only 220 bucks. The only catch is they have small hard drives and 4 gigs of ram but you can pop them open and add a larger hard drive and more ram. They have a nice processor though. A friend of mine asked me earlier this week the same question. Here is the Amazon link for the laptop, you might find it cheaper else where.

Recommend staying away from the entry level Lenovos... those 2 or 3 in one computers. I've had trouble with 2 of them for my daughter... plus trouble with the Lenovo Ideacentre 23" All-in-one touch screens I'm using in my clinic exam rooms! I should have just stuck with Dells... good luck with them in the past. But, I also have a Sony Vaio that has been chugging along without a hint of problems for the past 8-9 years...but only using it now for email and internet, no big programs any longer!

Actually I just remembered this one: Surface Pro. Those things are so cool! They can either take notes or use it as a full computer. I've gotten my wife an i3 and an i5 model and they both worked well.

Just bought my daughter a Mac Book Air for school and Apple threw in a set of $300 beats headphones for free for a student discount.

I am not sure what makes headphones worth $300 but she sure loves them.........

13" should be just fine. 14" laptops will give lot more cpu power , so juts dont look at the display size. What will be the primary use of this laptop ? mostly web browsing? some office works? or some heavy duty graphics /video processing?
Even the 12" ultra books are pretty outstanding if you are not considering computationally intensive things

I think they will primarily use it for schoolwork and whatever else 18 year old girls do on a computer. I.E. Facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc. :p

Any ultrabook will do, it will be cheaper, battery will last longer (almost 7 hours), the form factor is like a tablet, but the usability is like laptop. Asus, lenovo, hp, dell all will do. Almost all will let you install most softwares.

Macbook will have handdown the best hardware, but relatively less powerful for the same price, you'll also have the best support experience, as well as the battery will age nicely. Almost everything else (including thinkpad) the batter will deteoriate exponentially after some time.

It depends how much user support one want to do. I never have big issues when I have switch family members over to a Mac. :)

I tried pushing them in that direction, because I'm the one who will have to deal with it whenever the viruses, malware, etc. hits :p

The laptops came with 6 months of Webroot Secure Anywhere. Better, worse or equal to Norton? :confused:

Anti virus requires a lot of maintenance. Lots of a users time to make sure that the app is up to date. Not always an ideal thing for the average user.
