I think that I could make a nice diy lid with that mesh and the plastic tube I use to hang my light

Sure but you will have to retape it every time you go in the tank. I considered using magnets but seems like more trouble than it's worth.

There are diy videos on how to do that. Super easy and sits on the rim of your tank.
