Do you think it would be safe to reuse the sand that it came with?
If I had more room I would definitely do that but I need something compact. Maybe in the future.I know this isn't at all what you're asking for.. But I would heavily suggest considering a 40 gallon breeder, with a 40g breeder sump, and a metal wrack from home depot (which can be skinned and look nice).

Thank you for the suggestion. I might not do a sump right away now because I just got a deal on a new Biocube. But there is a eshops RS 75 on Facebook market that I can get for $75. So I might go ahead and get it and keep it for when I decide to plumb a sump. You really don't need a sump on the bio cubes. If you really want one use the 2nd chamber for that. There is usually a clear area on the back, 2nd chamber, whereas you can place a light if you want a refugium or grow algae. If there isn't room then In Tank sells a water proof one that works pretty well. You can even DIY route with a glass bottle similar to Voss water and make one.
Upgrade return pump.
Remove false bottoms in rear chambers
Chamber 1 divider - even out - search for video with DIY even trick
Add random flow nozzle on return
Later upgrade lighting to LED multi chip similar to blue acro or nano box
Bio cubes can pretty much grow any coral today with little to no effort. The challenge is with the owner deciding what fish to keep. Smaller tank means smaller choices for that but there are some stunning nanos out there with some dang incredible coral and fish color.
Best of luck.
