Check ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. You should have some nitrates but ammonia and nitrites should be 0.

When Ammonia and Nitrates reach zero, you will be left with excess Nitrates. They are not removed by any beginner aquarium filtration or the aerobic bacteria that have colonized your rock. If you are at this point, a large water change is prescribed. Change as much as feasible. The % you change will be close to the % in Nitrate reduction. Keep testing and go slow stocking and you lighting to mitigate the ugly algae blooms that come many times after the cycle
