Here we go! After many years of learning, failing, succeeding and realizing what’s manageable for me, I’ve decided to start a build where I feel comfortable with investing my time and efforts to maintain a reef again.

Took me awhile to have the faith in my abilities to take this leap back into the hobby!
Getting the same tingling feeling when I started my first reef :)

34G display.. why?
Larger systems are more stable!
This is true but I’ve done picos, nanos, small systems all the way up to almost 500 gallon systems and as much as I want a larger reef, I just wouldn’t have the time and money to properly maintain and keep the inhabitants healthy! Took me many years to come to peace with that!

To the build:

The Frame: I’m using studs and MDF wood as the top and side panels. I selected MDF wood in hopes it would keep the noise from the sump down. Definitely going to seal it to prevent the MDF from absorbing moisture but I’ve never used it before on a reef build so anyone with experience please lmk! Kind of regretting it now....

Top of Frame: I selected pine to do a top that wraps around the bottom black trim of the tank.

Sprayed it down with a gallon of plastidip I had laying around.

Planed, sanded with a DA, and cleaned the pine with mineral spirits, prepping for boiled linseed oil stain. I choose pine bc of how light the grain is plus boiled linseed oil really gives it that cool effect! Finished with 4 coats of thinned down polyurethane applied with a cheap 4in wide foam brush. Super easy to lay down.

Using insulation board between the MDF panel and bottom of tank.

For the doors I’m going to attach using these cool sliding rails that lets me detach the doors to all the panels. I want them all to come off whenever I need too... all the years of hard to reach, back aching maneuvers are hopefully gone!

Thanks for checking out my first build thread!

I’ll update with equipment and plumbing next, going to be some odd combos bc I’m going to be using pretty much a ton of miscellaneous equipment that I have been keeping in storage from my other builds.

Return/Flow/Drain:
Eheim 1260 with a Tee(with valve) in the return line to split to the display and sump which helps to alleviate such a strong return back into the display. I never liked the idea of restricting a return pump and read it on a thread here to add a T to just let the extra flow run back into the sump.

MaxspectGyre XF230 x2 as flow. Tbh it’s too much power even at 20% for this tank. Might consider purchasing something else on Black Friday or Trade someone.

Sprayed the 3/4 pvc with krylon to match my vertex skimmer :)

Decided to used both the predrilled holes as returns, run one as full and trickle the second one and use it as an emergency drain. The valve on the main drain gives me more control of drain’s return rate.

Ran loc line return but didn’t account for the leaking... I don’t think I’ve ever ran locline above water before.. didn’t think about that lol prob will switch it out.

RODI System:
Got my aquatic life smart buddie in and it’s awesome! Definitely recommend!! It pushed my psi from ~30psi to ~85psi when it settled. Got it hooked up to my 75 gpd BRS RODI unit and it’s making water sooo fast. I’ll have to time it if anyone is interested with more info.

Rockscape:
Mix of BRS macro rock/two little fishies Staxx/Carib sea real reef.
Attached using instant ocean hold fast epoxy! Great stuff held pretty well! But stinks like poo! Really took the time to create some cool loops and caves for the fish to swim and hide. Tbh I just glued one piece to another and kept going from there. Didn’t really have a plan but it worked out well. Don’t get discourage to try it out!

Salt/Sand:
Mixed up some saltwater using Quantum Mixed Macro at 34 ppm. Few of the local reefers here use it and are showing some awesome results with Quantum products so I’ll give it a shot.

CaribSea Bahama oolite 40lbs. Wow this stuff is fine and powdery. Definitely some fine sand and cloudy to start with.

Next Time:
Thanks for checking out the build! Cycling phase, bacteria, bio media, and all the good nitrogen cycle stuff next
