37 Gallon Reef Tank fish question

Happy Sunday!
I was at my LFS yesterday looking into some new fish to purchase and my LFS stated that a Tomini Tang 1.5-2.25” would work well in my tank. Right now I have a fairy wrasse and leopard wrasse in there with a clean up grew and gobies. I’m looking for some more movement in my tank. See more fish swimming around ya know. Do we all agree a Tomini tang 1.5-2.25” would work? I plan to upgrade in the future when I have more room for a bigger tank.

I wouldn’t do it, I bought a similar tang (Ctenochaetus binotatus) at 1 inch two years ago, he’s now approaching 3.5 inches. Also they’re highly active even when young and most likely won’t suffice in a 30G tank. You ideally want 3’ minimum (4’+ is better for this genus, the further into tangs the larger you need a tank to be).

I wouldn’t do it, I bought a similar tang (Ctenochaetus binotatus) at 1 inch two years ago, he’s now approaching 3.5 inches. Also they’re highly active even when young and most likely won’t suffice in a 30G tank. You ideally want 3’ minimum (4’+ is better for this genus, the further into tangs the larger you need a tank to be).

Yeah exactly, this is one reason as they are highly active at even a young age. Plus, who knows when you will get an upgrade, unless it is 100% certain already in the books, the future upgrade can be delayed or put to a stop to many things and then you are left with a fish that is nowhere suitable for a tank you already have.

The wrasses are already in tanks much smaller than they should be. Personally, I try to stay close to the recommended tank sizes.

No, don’t put a tang in there. Agree with above, try to stick to recommended tank sizes for the fish. I have a 34 gallon, one White Wyoming Clownfish , one Royal Gamma and two mandarins. A lot of scolys and swimming room.

Also, out of curiosity how big are your wrasses. These guys need a minimum of a 3’ length long term. The only reason I would ever put one of these guys in a tank smaller than 2.5-3’ long is due to if they come in small. The majority of leopards get 4” and the majority of fairies get 3-5” depending on species. They’re also highly active fish - Ever since seeing my Naokoae in my 4’ tank with my other 2 fairies, I don’t think I’ll ever have a wrasse like him in an 18” tank for over a year.

So my tank is 37 gallons, 30” Long 23” High. I have a 3” sand bed. Many rock and caves with hiding spaces. I have two filters running. Tidal 75 with Matrix rock, matrix carbon and chemi pure. I am also running a tidal 35 on the opposite end of the tank. I have a circulating pump and very good heater. All of my coral in my tank is thriving. I have had my shrimp, watchmen goby and wrasse for over a year and never faced any issues with their size and my tank. My LFS has stated many times that because of the filtration I am running, that the size of the tank really has no effect on any of the fish because my filtration is excellent considering I’m running 2 filters at once 24/7. There words exactly were “it may be a 37 gallon tank, but it’s running and functioning like a bigger tank”. I’m not the kind of fish owner that would purposely put fish in a tank if they wouldn’t be happy. I always ask many questions before I purchase a fish because they’re not cheap! As we all know. My leopard wrasse also came out today and he is very happy as well. The fairy wrasse is about 2-2 1/2 inches maybe a little smaller and my leopard wrasse is only about 2 inches. Again my LFS said they’d be perfectly ok in my tank.

I had a kole tang in here once but clown fish are evil and shredded him up. Never getting a clown ever again.

I’m surprised your gramma worked for you. Mine was evil and horrible. Gave him right back to my LFS. Guess they’re not for everyone. Also clownfish a big no for me, had horrible experiences for almost a year.

It’s a Biota Royal Gamma, very peaceful. The white Wyoming Clown is heading for 13 yrs.
I had a Tomato Clown in one of my past tanks, that’s a never again scenario. She was evil, swam across tank to bite my hand.
