Would I need one or two for a 40g breeder?I would look at the smatfarm leds. Two of those ran at a moderate to lower intensity would work well. Two noopsyche minis should work too.
Is there no tank mount for this one?Not especially, but you won't be able to lay it on the top as a mounting method, suspension is the way to go.

There is, but you mentioned the glass top, and the aqueon glass top may not have enough space for the factory on-tank mount. Is there no tank mount for this one?
Ok and you just hang it 12” away from the top of glass? There is, but you mentioned the glass top, and the aqueon glass top may not have enough space for the factory on-tank mount.
A used Hydra 32...?Those are $400 plus
I'm fond of 14" so I don't whack the light doing water changes... as long as coverage is good, height is where you grow coral fastest.Ok and you just hang it 12” away from the top of glass?
