We started out with putty, it's very stinky lol we switched to glue after we had an avalanche in the tank and for everyone's safety we tried something we thought was a better option for rock and did not at all consider that the fish might try to eat it, im willing to admit our rookie mistake. If it comes to this we will certainly try just about anything to help him!

Hi! While fish do occasionally eat items that they shouldn't, most of these issues are not serious. The key here would be to watch the fish closely for signs of diminished appetite, or the fish holding its mouth open. Porcupine puffers in the wild will crunch down on inedible items from time to time, but they should just eject them without swallowing them. I presume the glue was cyanoacrylate? That isn't very toxic to aquarium animals, once it has cured for a bit.

His mouth is now stuck closed rather than stuck open, we can tell he wants to eat but can't. How long could he possibly survive without a proper meal?

Yes, in the picture I attached his mouth was open...the second the glue got into his mouth it closed and he has not been able to open it since. He just has this stuck little smirk and while it's is incredibly adorable it just breaks my heart even more.

If the mouth was completely glued shut, the fish wouldn't be able to breath I think. Maybe it is glued shut just enough to keep it from eating, but it can still breath? Maybe it isn't eating due to another issue? As @vetteguy53081 said, mechanically opening it may be the only solution....

Hello everyone, I am new to the site and hobby. It's really my SO's hobby but I have grown to love each fish and frag. We have a bit of a 911...and I did search old threads but most were years old and not for this specific fish. We just got a porcupine puffer (I named him "Toast" and I am head over heels) yesterday, while gluing a frag we knocked over the puffer ATE THE GLUE!? I am absolutely terrified for his well being, I found a fish hospital but it is very far away and im hoping there is someone who has any advice on how to handle this situation I don't want to lose him! He is just the sweetest little guy in our tank! He bothers no one, no one bothers him, and I truly am amazed at his intelligence and how personable he is for a fish. His mouth is still closed as of right now. We have been metaphorically banging down the door of every forum, aquarium store, and fish owner trying to get answers or resolve to no avail. We're waiting it out as told but we did contact a fish doctor an hour or so from home this morning to be proactive. He's a trooper!

It's going down hill from here guys, moved Toast to the QT tank this morning as it looks like he is developing ich due to stress (after carefully examining everyone else Toast seems to be the only one showing symptoms) his mouth is 100% still sealed shut, he tries to eat at every feeding but cannot get his mouth to open. We will be treating the ich and continuing our wait to see if the glue will separate. I just feel so sad for him and absolutely horrible about myself as a keeper of fish and have no clue as to the right thing to do by him. Photos because he's still so cute
