Well I ordered a goldflake angelfish from Biota. Shipment left Biota on Monday for scheduled delivery on Tuesday. Unfortunately the ups plane had a maintenance issue and was delayed into Tulsa thus my goldflake missed the truck for delivery. I tried tirelessly to get ups to allow me to drive to Tulsa (about 2 hours one way) to get the fish but neither I nor Biota had any luck.

So best I could do was wait till Wednesday morning. Thankfully the local ups folks let me pick it up early that morning as soon as it was off the truck. I was very concerned for the fish as it had now been bagged about 40 hours.

Upon opening the box I inspected the fish which was lifeless and on the bottom of the bag upside down, I was so bummed! I also noticed the water in the bag was extremely cold. I didn’t think it would do any good but I turned on the passenger seat warmer and placed the bag directly on the seat for the 15 minute ride home. Once home I used a thermometer to see what the water temp was, I stopped letting it drop once I saw 54*

I went ahead and put the bag in the tank to warm mainly due to that is part of Biota’s protocol for replacement. I’m about 20 minutes I went to just check things out and I noticed his gills were moving, albeit slowly but moving nonetheless. In another 20 minutes the goldflake was actually upright but far from perfect with labored breathing and not very stabil. I went ahead and verified temp in bag matched tank temp and moved him into an acclimation box to observe.

Over the next couple hours he improved immensely thus I released him into my tank. I was hopeful he make it but not confident. Well it’s been over 48 hours since I released him and I’m happy to say he’s made himself at home and is eating well! I’d never have thought this would be the outcome but I’ll certainly take it.

I’ve had great luck with Biota. While the fish you get are normally very small they are extremely healthy and adapted to aquarium life. They do not QT their fish in the traditional sense. All of their livestock is raised in-house under strict biosecurity protocols designed and implemented by their marine biologists.
