I'm starting a new thread to document my journey with SPS/acorpora. My 210 gallon build thread originally started as a mixed reef with a focus on SPS, but over the last year I've fallen hard for sticks and decided it was time to make the relationship official!

As some of you know, I document my progress usually in video format. I'll be posting those in this thread along with many pictures on the progress of my conversion.

Here we go!

So after receiving @FarmerTy 's scribbled angel, I'm going to have to frag my zoas off my rocks in the coming 1-2 weeks. I currently have...:
  • Bloodshot Krakatoas
  • Utter Chaos
  • OLA Jupiter (LFS branded zoa)
  • Bam Bam's (I bought directly from Jason Fox)

I'm a little concerned with the Krak's because I've heard many colonies straight up die after being fragged. Besides that, the hardest part is the fact they are on base rocks.

I'll be moving them to my clown harem till I get the frag system up and running.

After adding the 3 new fish, I haven't had nutrient issues for the past week. Nitrates leveled off at 10ppm but then started to rise above that. To stop the slow rise of nitrates, I...:
  1. Turned on my skimmer for the first time in like... 7 months?
  2. Increased my refugium photoperiod by 1 hour
Nitrates are now around 5ppm. This is only after running my skimmer for 2 days. The skimmer has been turned off, but I'm leaving the refugium as is for now. I think with a bit more fine-tuning this will turn into a non-issue.

Bonus picture of a frag @Chaswood79 is picking up for me this weekend..

The Giesemann Spectra has been installed since 2/17 which puts me at about 2-weeks of using Metal Halide and LED-T5 bulbs. Since then, I've spent time every day looking for signs of stress and so far I have not seen anything. On the contrary, I'm seeing continued growth and an increase in coloration in certain pieces .

Increasing MH Photoperiod

My current lighting schedule is as follows:

MH Photoperiod: 4 hours
LED Photoperiod: 10 hours
  • LED ON @ 12pm
  • MH ON @ 4PM
  • MH OFF @ 8PM
  • LED OFF @ 10PM
I'm looking at eventually bringing my MH photoperiod up to 6-8 hours, still unsure as to how long I should have them on. Regardless, In the next week or so I want to begin increasing the photoperiod in small increments per week. My current thought is to increase them by 15-20 minutes per week. Any suggestions in this area would be helpful!

Well done. Keep going slow. Somewhere around the 6-8 week mark once you hit full MH stride, you ought to see a lot more change in color... it can take a while.

Yeah I'm just trying to keep everything stable in the interim to rule any other issue out. I've recently added 6~ new acros and I have 4 coming next week, so I've been only making minor adjustments to my 2 part doser.

I think starting next week I'll begin increasing the MH run time by 20 minute intervals.

So the latest addition to the tank almost became a disaster thanks to FedEx, but luckily no real damage was caused.

The scribbled angel will be in an unmedicated QT for 1-2 weeks. In the mean time, I need to remove my zoas, bounce mushrooms, and octospawn.

I'm still a little nervous about some polyp nipping, but after talking more with Ty I'm less worried.
