So I recently got a Derasa, today actually, as a trade with another hobbyist.

I already have 3 maximas who are doing well, and always wanted a Derasa.

It’s still acclimating a bit, so the mantle isn’t FULLY extended, but I noticed some weird abnormalities in its mantle near its incurrent siphon.

It seems like there is another layer of flesh that works as a “hood” and is a bit taut with the right side of the mantle?

I took a picture but because of the clam patterns, I also illustrated what I see.

Anyone see mantles like these? Probably a weird defect, it seems to force some of the right side of the mantle into the center a bit.

Also included some maxima tax

@OrionN Do you have any thoughts on this?

Definitely doesn’t seem like PMD, but wanted to be sure.

That part of the mantle has two layers it seems

Edit: I forgot to mention, the previous owner traded it away since his shrimp was picking at it and bothering it.

Could this be the result of that?

It could have just got banged up from transporting it to your tank. Mine did something similar when I first got it in the tank. Keep on eye on it though!
Maybe, could just be a tear.

I will. Not too concerned yet, and as long as it’s not PMD that could have put the other clams in jeopardy, I’m fine with it.

The seller’s picture seems shows a similar problem though, albeit with the mantle fully expanded so we’ll see.

Maybe it’s something it can grow out of?

Mine had a small tear in its mantle and it healed up in a week or so. You’ll see a small scar when it heals

It is likely not PMD which started at he outside rather than the middle or near the siphons. What I see is the mantel right there is indented and does not get as much light. I had a similar looking Derasa. Mine was fine even if he has a slightly strange looking “face”.

Wow, I thought this was my tank for a minute. Looks just like my Derasa.
