I have a 40g breeder tank. The lights sits on top of the tank. So maybe my medium wouldn't be medium? Maybe he needs to be on the sanded?
Perhaps a local reefer could loan you a par meter or you could rent one from Bulk Reef Supply.

My first thought when reading this was light and flow. Yes you want medium light and flow. Placement can determine par levels. Are you sure light is medium and not low or high?
My hammer is doing better! I moved him to his own island towards the back of the tank but to the left. So he has his own rock with some zoas only. He is getting less flow than where he was before but that seemed to do it. He's back to being super fluffy! Im super happy lol Thank God!

I have started a small garden close to the bottom of the tank and they seem to love the placement. Only issue is my anemone has tried to creep up on the rock so I've had to put a couple small rocks in between to create a barrier.

i love the color of those acans. They prolly look so dang cool in the blues. This is the frag I have. It has 9 heads on it. It’s don’t acclimating. I’m just not sure where to put it. I’d love to have it higher up but I’m not sure with the flow. There’s an island I would love to have it on but my hammer is there. I just put the hammer there a few days ago and he’s finally fluffy so I can’t move him. It took me forever to find him a spot. He’s on an island with few Zoas. The other pic is the pagoda and candy cane. Is the candy cane polyp slightly inverted cause the pagoda is too close to him? I’ve never seen it do that. It’s been in the same spot for over a month. And the pagoda I just moved there yesterday. And he’s extremely happy there so I’m at a lost at who to move lol it sucks. Maybe I can just move the candy cane a little more out. He’s just so fluffy too I hate to even move it slightly!

I would pick a spot and try it out without gluing them in place and if they seem to be doing good then secure them to the spot. Acans typically aren't too picky unless they are getting way too much flow or light. Also, you could be having some coral warfare going on I would keep an eye on them and if the cane looks any worse i would give them a little more space.

I moved the candy cane up higher - mid way up the rock. I think it was the flow tho. I noticed I accidentally moved the powerhead when I was feeding LOL whoops! I moved it any way tho to give it space to grow.

I think it’s safe to say they like their new spot? Holy cow. Never seen them so big and juicy!!

The place I picked for the acans was in the back to the right of the tank. I’ve never seen them that big! They’re so dang fluffy. I glued them there to the rock and it’s really grabbing the rock like it loves it lol very happy to see that! I know my first attempt with acans didn’t go well, but I didn’t know too much about them. My friend had given them to me. I really love these under the blue light. So I picked them out. I can already see it stretching out on the rock to grow more.

How does it grow on the sand? They can't encrust over it to my knowledge

I’m still struggling with the hammer. It was doing well, got fluffy again but now it’s not. I think it’s the lighting. I don’t have the greatest light. I’m gonna replace them asap, hopefully this weekend I can. I have the coralife one. It’s not horrible but it’s not made for the coral that need high PAR. I think it’s the light cause the parameters are perfect.

They like lower light in my experience. I keep mine on sand bed as well or their own rock in sand bed. Have had great success with favia, acan, blasto, all down low. Sorry my tanks got a smudge lol but there's more under the clam lip I have to move it back. Keeps moving Ober on me

Yeah I have the hammer in lower lighting tho. And not too much flow. He’s not receded but he’s not fluffy ☹️ The only coral that is doing well. Everyone else is doing so great. Not sure what to do! I can try and move him agai

You want medium flow and light with placement in the lower 1/3 of the tank.

I've always had the best results by keeping acans in low and/or shaded lighting and moderate flow. This is a picture of an acan that I had in an old tank a long time ago. As you can see, the new baby heads have much more/better color. These new heads were in indirect low light while the predominantly red heads were getting hit with a lot more light.
