I never fed trachyphyllia lol

I am very recently starting to now very occasionally because my tank is ULNS, but when nutrients were detectable, which was for the longest time, I never ever fed them.
Trachy or acantho?

Totally believe you. That’s not to say occasional feeding wouldn’t benefit, especially If the corral is having a health issue
What fish do you have in your tank? Please list every single one.

I’ve lost 4 acantho over the last 12 months.

They all last 3-4 months

My fish over last year are

Current
1 cardinal fish
1 tomini tang
1 yellow wrasse (formerly named coris)
1 male lyretail anthia
1 lemon damsel

for months 1- about 8 I also had a female lyretail anthia and a purple firefish

Purple firefish I had for 3 years and he just vanished and never came back. Lost the female anthia to bullying from the male

It’s the Tomini tang. I can almost guarantee it.

Tomini added December last year. Already had 3 acantho’s lost by then
I thought there is no reason to lose them when scoly, trachy, symphyllia and multiple Cynarina all do fine. I kept trying replacement acantho. They all are open fine for 1-2 months then begin to decline. Once it starts I can’t reverse it or stop

Certain tangs have preferences for different brain corals.

Have you noticed the ancanthos were more inflated at night and slowly retracted by the day?

Since it took 1-3 months to decline, the tang (if it was the tang) wasn’t a chronic nipper. It might have had a few pecs here and there, which compounded over time, would cause the death.

Try it. Find a temporary home for the tang, add an acanthophyllia, and watch it start to do fine.

Of course, this is my prediction. I highly doubt it’s a chemistry, flow, or lighting issue if very similar corals are thriving.

No no. I’ve only had the tomini for about a month. The majority of last year I didn’t have him

And what I notice with acantho is they are more retracted at night. Open during the day. And retract after lights out

Oh. I understand.

If it’s happening at night, there’s probably an invert involved.

At night I notice the Acantho puffy and tentacles out.
In day open up. but over past few weeks unhappy in day.
The wrasses will go.
Definitely all Tangs nibble on Acantho

Here is my solution. I’m not buying acantho lol
I switched to higher end trachy and more Cynarina lol

There are tons of corals out there. And, unfortunately, not everyone’s tank can support the life needs of every single coral

Many people have a coral or coral type they can’t keep for unknown reasons. You can go crazy making changes trying to accommodate it. But if it comes down to changing everything and ditching fish…might be worth while to take a step back and ask if it’s worth making all these changes for one thing. There’s plenty of other options. And other meat/donut corals that are just as nice and unique in other ways
