I am just posting this for some of the new guys out there. It seems to be some confusion to what "milli's" are.
A "milli" is a species of the genus acropora, millepora being the species.

Thanks for posting this - as a science teacher it drives me crazy when I see people refer to A. millepora as Millepora (note the capital M which is incorrect). Millepora is actually a genus of corals commonly known as fire corals and basically no one keeps them in their tank. They are not even closely related to the corals we commonly keep.

Obviously it is a small thing but demonstrating a basic knowledge of biology and binomial nomenclature should be a part of this hobby.
A. millepora is an awesome and very diverse species of Acropora.
Using a shortened or common name is fine when everyone in the conversation knows what your talking about but it often appears that some people do not know "milli" is a species of "acro"

Binomial nomenclature is cumbersome and used specifically by Biologists and bio enthusiasts imo, its for the same reason in the hobby we (most people, not everyone) commonly refer to Calcium, Magnesium, and Alkalinity in terms that make NO sense what so ever. Calcium is a soft metal in the 2nd row of the periodic table, that is extremely reactive and would cause such a reaction in water it would be dangerous. The ion Ca2+ however in the aqueous form (how its found in our tanks) or Ca2+ (aq) is the proper usage. Its these things we cannot expect everyone in the hobby to understand and use on a daily basis or these forums would be insanely lengthy and annoying to read through in my opinion. This is also from a science teacher.

On the other hand I can see how it can help people better understand and care for their animals in the hobby, knowing exactly what genus and specie it is can help you do your research better.

I disagree. Most people don't know the binomial nomenclature of the family dog, or the plants in their house, or the food they eat. So why is it so important to know the binomial nomenclature of what is living in their fish tank?

+1^...... I think 95% of reefers understand why your saying when you say millie, acro, monti ect. Leave the latin names for researchers, and calling people out on it is just rude IMO.

Is this from your fav sps thread? I only referred to millis as being my fav acro, lol. Didn't mean it as its own thing.

This has nothing to do with calling anyone out. This is just a bit of education for those who do care and want to learn. If you do not care then you do not care. How ever there are people on this forum who do want to learn and do get confused sometimes.
