Ok...

I scored a good deal on a drilled ADA 24" x 12" x 7" tank. I could not help but pick this thing up. Those tanks a beautiful and this one is no exception. It's drilled with a GH nano overflow and return. So, now the question is what to do with it.

I have a location for the tank next to my 40B display. I was thinking that I could either turn this into a frag tank and plumb it into my existing system, but I can't help but think there's something far more cool that could be done with this little tank. In any case, the intent is to plumb it into my existing system since it's only a net addition of 8 gallons of water.

As far as lighting is concerned, I have an old maxspect G2 110W fixture that's not being used. The plan is to either use that, or a DIY T5 set up as the location in which this tank will be installed will suit either. I have a total height clearance of about 16" so that would leave anywhere from 6-8" above the water line for the lighting.

So, in light of the truly awesome tanks on this site, I ask the R2R members for some recommendations. My first thought is frag tank but again....there must be a better plan.

Your thoughts?

Do you have any pics? That's a cool idea and if plumbed into my existing system, can only be beneficial. It would be a display system and some unique macros would be awfully cool.

You could always set it up as a "frag tank" but take a whole different approach. It will be a tank for frags but not with the traditional egg crate, etc. Make it it's own tank and do some fish or invert you have always wanted to do or something like that. Fill it full of those ceramic frag station rocks. :)

That's also a good idea, Rev. I'll be picking the tank up sometime next week, so I'm really just putting this together in my mind at this point. Then I need to get the blessing from the wife on the location. I have a feeling she will not be entirely thrilled with the location however I think it's going to work out perfectly. Otherwise it's going to be hidden from view or will have to be stand alone. We shall see.

So, in giving this more thought, I'm thinking more and more that I may set this up as an LPS tank. I LOVE LPS however since I'm catering my other tank to SPS dominant, the LPS I like to keep are not happy there. It's shallow and gets a ton of light and flow so maybe, just maybe, I can set up this little nano to feed the LPS crave. I would have to use a different light than what I currently have available and may DIY a small LED fixture for it. Just a thought......

Ok...picked the tank up yesterday. I have it in its new home. Now.....on to lighting....

Right now I'm thinking of a small DIY LED with 2 3-ups, 1 OCW, and 1 True Violet, all from LED Group Buy. What I'm not sure of now is the best way exactly to acheive this. I'll be looking in the LED forums for some ideas, but if anyone has any advice, I sure do welcome it.

My first thought was to get a DIM4 and run the LED off of it in lieu of a driver due to the limited size and the flexibility that the DIM4 has is pretty nice. I would then have to figure out what to do about a heat sink, so utimately still undecided.

Not a bad idea. This is still in planning
though. Have the tank but no lights yet. Thinking frag tank plumbed into the main display still.
