Hello all, my new tank has been running for 5 weeks now. My sump has lots of room to add stuff, what would be good to have? I plan on dosing with Redsea Nopox at some point. My last sump I had media block, but it seemed to crumble apart and dirty my sump. Maybe some dead rock?

What I did was use some leftover OXO containers my wife had and placed some Maxspect bio spheres inside.

Toss the OXO lid, place in sump, and you now have a container with biomedia that will:

a) reduce the flow rate that passes through, creating an anaerobic environment for denitrifying bacteria

b) contain debris from any decomposing ceramic

Thats a good idea, do you drill any holes in the side of the container to help with flow? Do you blow the media every so often to clean?

No to both.

a) You really want to limit the amount of flow to create the anerobic environment. Drilling holes just increases the amount of oxygenated water (which is what we don't want).

b) Blowing the media can introduce oxygenated water but more so... blow the ceramic debris out of the container that we were trying to avoid in the first place!

I treat it as set and forget... place it in your sump and leave it alone :)
