Added a powder blue tang

Hey guys, so my tank has been up and running for two and a half years now, it’s a 300g tank.. I’ve been wanting a powder blue for the longest time now, and I thought really hard about it due to the fact that I had a gold rim tang in my tank already, and I did realize that they were same species... I decided to purchase a powder blue because my gold rim has a very peaceful personality, so when the powder blue was acclimated and ready, I put him in my tank, and sure enough, my goldrim didn’t pay attention to him, and I expected that reaction since he’s very peaceful, but I was also shocked.. the problem now is that I now noticed the powder blue chasing my goldrim around[emoji33][emoji33][emoji33].. so now I’m confused.. the powder blue is about an inch and a half bigger than my goldrim, but i don’t get why HE is the Agressor instead of my goldrim... a little help please!

The PBT is most likely just establishing itself, it’s very easy to tell if it will turn deadly. If it’s mild chasing and some tail swatting I wouldn’t worry too much. Give it time and they will probably tolerate each other.

Not the same species. They are in the same Genus. Powder blue are a lot more aggressive than Gold Rim. In this case, The Powder Blue is bigger and more aggressive, that is why he is the dominate fish, even if he is the newer fish.
You can tape a mirror on the tank (several in a large tank like your's). This will redirect the aggression of the PBT to his mirror image rather the Gold Rim. This will hopefully let the two settle in together for long term.

You can also add more tangs to defuse the situation, or remove the Gold Rim if there is any danger of significant injury.

I can certainly understand why you have been wanting one forever. I consider them the most beautiful of the tangs. Not the rarest or most expensive but most beautiful.

The chasing is mild... they swim past each other without any problem.. it’s only at random times that the powder blue decides to chase him around.. I’m not too worried because The aggression hasn’t gone to another level..

The thing that amazes me is that I actually have two mirrors taped to two sides of my tank.. but the powder blue isn’t going for it, it’s my gold rim the one going nuts after his reflection

They are the most beautiful! He was not expensive at all.. I was actually really surprised at the price ilu got it for.. its about 6inches, got it for $50 on fishy business aquatics
