Adding chromis

It’s a mixed reef 220 gal.

I want to add a school of chromis to my tank and I’m just not sure if it’s a good idea. I don’t know about the pros and cons, if some one could help I would greatly appreciate it. The tank just feels empty.

The tank is a mixed reef set running for about a 1.5 years.

Currently in the tank:

2 yellow tangs
1 hippo
Juvenile emperor
2 clowns
3 cardinals.

Chromis more than likely will pick each other off one by one unit there's one or two left from what I understand

I have a trio that Ive had together a year and a half. Got them as babies. Guy who breeds them separates them in trios so not sure if that made a difference but mine are thick as thieves

I added 7 to my 100 gallon reef 2.5 years ago. One died 6 months ago and the remaining 6 are doing well with absolutely no aggression. They’ve all doubled in size. So, I wouldn’t take as fact the warnings about how they will kill each other off or how many are needed in a grouping.

I think because you have such a large tank, 220 gal, you will be ok to put 7 in, odd number is better, try to pick the 7 yourself at a local store, try and get all the same size, look for the passive ones, it's better that you have tons of room, and the other fish you have listed should all get along. anything less then 175 they would be too close and they would pick on each other until the big dominant one is left.

I have tried 3 and ended up with 1 and a few years later I tried 4 and ended up with 1. Both were in 75g mixed reef. Everything is fine the first 6 months but one always grows a little bigger than the others and then he becomes the aggressor.

However I do not want to discourage. It doesn’t always end up this way from what I read, and with your tank size I think you’d have better chances than others. Just know it’s a possibility

I put 3 chromis and 3 anthias into my 75 gal about 2 years ago.

They have the occasional pink vs blue battle but so far all are okay.
I think that the fact they have someone else to have a go at they leave each other alone.

I doubt you'll have a problem in such a large tank.

Chromis are tough little buggers. I have 6 in a 210 and they argue every now and then but more of a posturing match than anything else. I also have 5 Cross’s damsels and 7 lyretail anthias so they keep each other in check. For me, the key to keeping seemingly incompatible or aggressive fish has been to have several of each so aggression is not targeted.

Quarantine them. Source is also important.

If you want an alternative you can get Lyretail Damsels from Biota for heck of cheap right now. They do not shoal as much as the Chromis do but they are small, spawn, and active. No fight club death matches either. I have 11 in my 210 and they are fun to watch.

I had 3 in my 50g but after coming back from a 1 week trip one was missing. Mine are peaceful and work wells with my clownfishs. Absence of aggressive moves.
Chromis are cheap so even if they died, that's a good source of protein for your CUC :p
