Would adding kalkwasser into a 5 gallon tank be ok? No ATO. How do you guys add kalkwasser into your nano tank...

just curios why you would want to dose kalk in that small of a tank? partial water changes would be a much safer and probably easier way since youd only have to replace 1/2- 1 gallon of water a week.

I just figured it would be a plus since I'm still new to this. Will doing water changes like you mention be just as beneficial?

I have a 30 gallon which I still consider a nano. Water change ma work up until you have a large amount of coral and it consumes more than a water change can replenish.

I have a 5.5 with a hang in back fuge that I dose mild kalk with. Total water volume minus rock and sand is probably 6-7 gallons. Everything seems to love the extra boost. I do a water change every week of a half gallon and dose the kalk in the ATO.

Do you need to dose? Are your parameters stable? Is calcium being used up at at high rate?

I know a lot of people talk about dosing kalkwasser, but if you do not have a lot of organisms that are using up a lot of calcium faster than water changes can keep up with, it really isn't necessary. That and you shouldn't really dose things to adjust chemistry if you can't/aren't measuring the effects. You can send things south in a big hurry in small tanks.

I agree with simple water changes with an appropriately sized picture. Kalk sludge has to be dealt with, and if accidentally sent into a nano, your ph is likely sky rocket.

+1 to all above. you can add a bit of kalk yes itll be fine.
But you really prob be best served with an ato. even if your not dosing in it. it adds stability to an already tiny system A diy is not to tough and always look for used deals..

Find a schedule to do water changes and try to stick with that schedule, run tests next day after water change, take notes of perimeters, test water b4 next water change and you will have a idea of how much is being depleted from system, over a coarse of time u will see your numbers gradually fall, this is when most ppl start to use kalkwasser when they see the water change is not keeping up with system requirements. And since you say your new to this hobby I cannot stress it enough patience and time, only thing happens in a reef tank fast is usually disaster.
