What is the best method of treatment for AEFW and Acropora Eating Red Bugs? Can the tank be treated for these two pests or will they need to be dipped in a solution? I have interceptor for the red bugs but what is the most effective treatment for AEFW? Can I mix the Interceptor with the AEFW treatment in a bucket and treat the coral or do I have to have each treatment solution in a separate bucket?

ricky so far there isnt no 100% all in one medication for them because there two different types of monsters. yadda yadda yadda. only thing iv ever done was interceptor for hours till im positive and also while inspecting the frags in the interceptor cut any thing thats not coral off cause thats where the eggs would be hiding or anywhere where its tuff to get a strong blow from a turkey baster they will be hiding then revive dip them before they go into the tank. some people will claim that coral rx kills everything yet i think it will only stun red bugs. If it was 100% killing redbugs then the company would write it on the bottle and make millions selling it.

ohh and its smarter to do them in separate buckets as the two chemicals may create something very strong or cancel one of the others out. pluss a good way of not getting them is inspecting before you buy and only buy from people you trust.

I set up a 5 gallon tank to use as a quarantine tank yesterday afternoon. I’m using the Koralia nano for water circulation, a 50/50 spectrum 40 watt power compact light fixture and a 50 watt heater. I did this so I could inspect a few of my corals that have a few bite marks on them possibly from Acropora Eating Flatworms (AEFW). I also wanted to make sure the red bugs were gone so I added 1/16th of a large dog tablet of Interceptor. I plan to dip these corals in TLF ReVive for 10 minutes to see if the AEFW’s fall off any corals. I will keep you updated on my progress.

The ORA green acro with blue polyps on the left has a few bite marks and is turning brown.

You can see the Tri-Color on the right has a few bite marks and is turning brown.

Don't know to much about AEFW, but you might want to check for that big Bristle Worm, I have seen them here in the Caribbean eating Acropora Palmata , they thirve on them. Google SPS Eating BristleWorms.

I've had very good luck basting to keep the AEFW in check. I do it 1x per week and colors and growth are great. All reefs have parasites and predators so you just have to keep an eye on things. Some folks think it is the kiss of death but you just have to roll with it and not rip apart the tank. This will hurt your corals more than the pest themselves.

You should ALWAYS dip all coras before placing them into your display, whether it comes from a trusted source or not. Most pests travel through tanks looking for food... Lets say you have a LPS dominate tank, you buy an SPS and look it over for typical SPS problems. Well that SPS could be harboring something that eats LPS coral or vice versa. Nudibranches and Flatworms are notorious for doing that.

So its better to be safe then sorry.

Once I graduate from UNC in December I'll be back home for awhile and I plan to tear down the 120 and start all over. I want to use less live rock and make a rockscape similar to Ching Chai's by making rock towers. This will give me better flow and I might go bare bottom so I can siphon the detritus when it settles in the corner. I want to dry out all the live rock and re-cure it, I want to make frags of all the corals and start up a frag tank. This will make it easier to treat the corals for Red Bugs and AEFW since I can dip each frag in a solution of ReVive. I'm not sure how the fish will fair during this, I guess I'll have to keep them in a rubbermaid container and change the water every few days to prevent a spike in ammonia and nitrite. I want to dry out the live rock so it will kill any parasites living on the rocks/coral bases and it'll take care of the aiptasia. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how I should go about this plan.

Ricky. sorry to see your tank got hit so bad. i remember you used to sell a ton of frags. (im on DVRC btw) I know Derek (rodstar) on DVRC has had AEFW and he did the same as you in taking everthing out and fragging what he could to save it. but i think he lost 90% of what he had, but he didnt have as much as you i dont think.

Are you using a turkey baster or powerhead? I love your tank, but how do you get a good blast on each coral, in particular, at the bases? Also wanted to know if you still sell and trade your frags and just tell other reefers you have AEFW.

We treated our tanks with Interceptor 3 times to get rid of the red bugs, but did manual dipping in Tropic Marin Procoral Cure to get rid of the flatworms. We dipped once a week for 1.5 months to treat the flatworms and just to be safe. Yes, that meant taking every last piece of coral out and dipping it, yes it was a HUGE pita, but it worked. You just have to keep your eyes on the prize and not falter with the treatment otherwise they'll take over again. I'm much more religious about quarantining new corals now too.

Its very important when dipping the corals not to leave them in the dip longer than 10-15 min as the tissue can get damaged and cause the corals to bleach. Its also helpful to have a bucket of clean saltwater to shake them off in before putting the corals back in your tank. Good luck! All of us that keep any significant amount of corals have gone through this process.

AEFW on my DT

I thought this would never happen to me, but somehow, after all the dips, this “little†guy made it.

He was having a great time on a sunset millie. I had some Flatworm Exit on hand, so does it work?!?

AEFW after FWE

This morning some of my acros were showing bite marks, but hours later, they have grow the tissue back. I will keep basting, and if they get out of control I will do a QT and treat them with FWE. Wish me luck!

So that is your video now Luisra? Last I read, you were waiting for supplies to start.

I still question any legitimacy to the fact that FWE can work on AEFW, even at high concentrations. I would need more than a single youtube video to convince me of that. Until then, QT QT QT!
