Curious more than anything. I use a 5 gallon ATO jug for my 28 gallon. Could I add afr to ATO rodi water? ATO runs maybe twice a day. I wouldn't know how to figure out how much to put in there, but I have to figure not much. Thoughts?

Yes you should be able to dose afr...I dose from my 5g buckets and been doing it for years...i don't use afr though....

You’d have to mix it full strength or it would grow bacteria and not work correctly.. afr is best used on a doser and calculated at full strength.

Already covered the ATO part. Having said that with a 28 gallon system (don't know the age or daily consumption of say alkalinity) you can:

  • Mix up AFR, put in a gallon jug with a pump handle, one or two quick pumps, add, and your done
    • Just need to measure how much each squirt yields
  • Bi weekly water change
  • Kalkwasser in ATO

I think AFR is fine being dosed manually since it doesn't raise alk quickly. At least on a system that doesn't have an extremely high demand. I dosed manually for several months and only switched to a doser because some times I would forget to dose.

I agree that AFR should not be diluted. Bacteria will grow in the ATO, consuming the AFR.
What difference would it make if the bacteria consume the AFR in the ATO vs in the display tank? Would it not raise the alk the same?

Just curious. I agree to not use AFR in the ATO.

They will consume trace elements too, and will clog dosing pumps with goo. Someone posted about that, maybe Hans-Werner.

It will also potentially cause precipitation of calcium carbonate.

I diluted AFR by 1/2 and it turned into a slimy soup

Thanks guys! That makes sense.
