One mp40 on a 50 gal is plenty - they are powerful !

I had a JBJ AIO 65 gal mixed reef with one mp40 for 2.5 yrs - no issues. Remember, you still have your return nozzles as well.

For the price of one mp40, i would go with two Nero 5s mounted on the back pointing forward along with your nozzles pointing to the sides. TBH, you wont notice the wires hanging out from the Neros after few months.

Or just go with one mp40 ; )

I thought they were cool and figured it would provide added flow? Thoughts and any reason I shouldn't use the oscillating ones?

Also, you can upgrade that return pump if you want more flow or more power as well if that pump isnt strong enough for your taste.

I've never used an oscillating nozzle so idk there, but i've used VCA random flow generator nozzles and they are great but it is not necessary. Something like this here but youll have to find the right fitment

In my 62g lagoon AIO, I have a large and small low profile wavemakers on the back wall, magnet in the AIO chambers to hold and a gyre pump on the side wall. Gives me tons of flow, but not enough to blow substrate around. All 3 pumps are DC but I run them at 100%

Are you talking about the spin stream nozzles from IM? I don’t know if they make them anymore but they weren’t very good. They would get gummed up and stop spinning quite often for me.

Stick with a random flow generator like get-salty said.

Also, I think you may be overthinking this whole thing. Your tank is fairly small and you will get good flow from almost any powerhead.

It sounds like you like the aesthetics of the mp40. It will give you more flow then you will ever need in that tank.

Just go with that and then when you upgrade tanks in the future you can still use the mp40

Cool, thank you guys. I will go with the 1 mp40. I was just hoping not to get any dead spots and to have good flow distribution. Guess putting sand and water needs to happen first! Very excited reef flakes sand and mesoflakes comes early next week from Tropic eden

I think you made the right decision with the MP40...although I am pretty biased. I am all for a clean look, and not having any cords in the tank does it for me. I am certainly not going to judge you for having an MP40 on the side wall lol. I personally think it would enhance the tank : )

I bought and ran MP40s on my old 50 cube so I was “ready when I upgraded”

Multiple fish were killed that were all perfectly healthy fish that I had had for a few years. The 40s were just too big for such a small tank.

I could run mine on the back wall and I really liked the 2 MP10s I had prior to the 40s

Mp10 is NOT low profile. Mp10,40, and 60 are all designed the same, just a bit smaller as you step down in size - due to smaller impeller.

If you’re hung up on the echotech design, just go with one mp40 OR two mp10. But like I’ve mentioned , you WILL eventually upgrade and the benefit of having an mp40 is you can use it on the bigger tank. Yes, you can sell and re-purchase things, but that’s up to you.

I have an IM 50 ext, so not quite the same display dimensions as your AIO but extremely close. I have run 1 mp10, 2 mp10s, 2 mp10s+Nero 3, and currently a combo of 1 mp10+1 mp40. All of these setups had RFGs to randomize flow. All mps have wide flow adaptors on them (i think it’s called the urchin? Something like that, on BRS site)
All that being said.. my mp40 is barely running but i purchased because i know with certainty that I’m going to use it on my next build. With RFGs on your return nozzles you can likely get away with either a single mp10 or mp40. If you think you’re going to upgrade later down the line an mp40 will work well but just know it moves a lottt of water in our shallow tanks. I can vouch for the other points being made about the Nero cord. It’s nonvisible in tank, but lord is it annoying to clean the pump..and you will NEED to clean often. I keep everything in an electronics cabinet so digging through the cables to unplug the Nero sucks pretty bad. YMMV and you can get away with basically any wavemaker in this tank. Take budget, aesthetics, and future plans into account

Sidenote on mp10 x2 vs single mp40. If you have any plan or inkling of a doubt to upgrade eventually, just snag the mp40. The mp10 starts to fall off (figuratively flow wise, and literally due to glass thickness) on the next size up of tanks. And if your planning on battery backup you can save some coin here by not buying ecotech battery. I run ecoflow batteries and the amount of time it covers is insane.
