Algae Help!!

I'm saying 7 days no lights, covered so no light can penetrate. I know its rough to go so long no tank viewing.
no they will be fine!!!:wink: WHEN DONE, SHORTEN PHOTOPERIOD SO YOU DO NOT BURN THE CORALS!!! or raise the lights, or get a screen.

Good info on the thread... it's definatly Dinoflagellates. I wouldn't go more than 72 hours without light (speaking from personal experience). Running GFO will help too.
3-4 days might be enough, but I went three days the first time and didn't get the dinos all the way, so then I went a week and never seen it since.

I have the same algae and I get it every Spring. I think that it runs a natural cycle or it starts to grow as the water temp starts to rise. Of course those are assumptions. But, every Spring it starts to grow and its gone about 3 weeks later without me changing or doing anything about it.

Now that you mention it my tank started getting it too. I thought it was cyno and was going over all the things I've changed in my tank to make it happen. I've only had my tank for a year so I haven't seen this type before.

The main think when doing lights out is watch your PH as it will drop very low if not watched. You can drip kalk or do a kalk slurry just becarefull if doing the slurry not to over shoot your target PH

How about just adding some snails. I like astrea snails. Turn your algae frown into a hungry snails smile :) If your flow is good, their poop will be taken away by the current and skimmed and the nutrients will be removed from your system.

I have a fairly new tank only 4 months old and it looks like I have the same problem as you. I also think I may have pick up bryopsis.
So to battle the bryopsis I started raising my Mag level a little every day. This is suppose to kill off the bryopsis. Well its not only working on the bryopsis its also killing off all the problem algae that is growing on my rocks and glass. I am also finally getting coralline algae growing all over my tank, probably just a coincidence.

Not a coincidence. Mag is one of the Holy Trinity (Alk,Ca,Mag) and if you can get those at the correct levels for your tank then good things happen with coralline and coral growth.
