Algae ID - I need some ID on this stringy algae with little white tufts on the end of thick(ish) stalks.

Hardy little stalks with tiny white pompoms on the end of each stalk. Clear or light brown in color depending on the light.

Also, at first it didn't seem to be a nuisance but now I do believe it prevents coral from growing where they meet. Doesn't scrub off easily with a brush.

it's a form related to hydroids (I think).
