I added a purple footed green bubble tip anemone this afternoon. I have what I think is the perfect spot with a nice cozy crevice for it. Hopefully it will stay over night, but I've got my wavemaker covered just in case.
When I put it in I kept my hand kinda cupped around it until it had ahold of the edges of the crevice. I left it be, and it eventually pulled it's foot down into the crevice then bubbled up nicely.
It almost looked like it bubbling up was helping it wedge itself into that crevice nice and snug.
The mouth looked like it was pulled way back into that crevice all afternoon.
About 4 hours later when the lights went out, I sat right next to the tank for about 30 minutes watching what it did.
Slowly, the bubbles deflated, and now about 50 minutes after lights out the tentacles look a lot more stringy, the foot / mouth seem a lot puffier.
After watching this, and reading all over the place, I think these things are like the Chipmunks of the ocean.
It seems like they have lips, which have ducts going to each tentacle. During the day, they fill their tentacles up with water and zooxanthellae, then at night they suck the zooxanthellae out of their little tentacle houses back into their mouths, where they filter feed the products of the zooxanthellae.
In any event, it's been really cool to watch!
