I see lots of reefers with anthias in their aquarium. Just curious why! What do you love about them?

What isn't to love? They're flashy, they swim a lot, they're typically mild-mannered. :)

That's kinda what I thought just wondered if they had some other purpose than to be beautiful! Like some fish eat algea, others eat pests etc etc. didn't know if anthias had other things! But would they get eaten by my baby fumanchu?

Very colorful and usually very active, as long as you can make sure to fatten them up after you get them, they're a great fish to have

They're definitely not a 'utility fish' like tangs and rabbitfish, they're the opposite end of the spectrum - typically a little delicate (especially after first receiving them) and they have very high metabolisms and should be fed several times daily.

Lionfish will eat anything that will fit in their mouth.

I know about lions but he's a dwarf and a fumanchu he's an opportunist not a hunter.

They are a predator, and anthias are prey. I don't know how large they get, but most anthias get 2-4", with some species getting around 5-6".

Yes this is true but if I have fish and shrimps sizes he could eat but doesn't I'll take my experiences with my chances. Just was a question. Other than the obvious of if it fits it eats. But anthias would be too large for him I believe even if he was fully grown unless of course I bought 1 to 2 inch babies.

anthias are the epitome of a reef for me, brightly colored, shoaling, active. Whats not to love!? I have been waiting since the day i started saltwater, many tanks ago, to have a setup that I felt would work for these guys. Picking up my first deep waters today!

I keep 5 Bimaculatus and 8 Fairy Bartletts (among many other fish). 2 of the bimacs are approaching hermaphroditic change to male and I'm sure the larger will emerge as a terminal male. their activity level, swimming, feeding, schooling, rock hiding and particularly the female/male expressions are awesome. beautiful colors. my only bad experiences with them has been their appetite for small (and expensive) cleaner shrimp.

Well my cleaner shrimp was killed recently by my fumanchu! You'd think he'd eaten him RIGHT? No my cleaner shrimp annoyed the crap out of the fu and i believe the fu just stung him and he died. I have a few other fish in the tank that are pretty close to small enough and they never bother the fu but that cleaner shrimp was always up in his face and my fu would get mad kinda funny!

Anyways waiting for my 50 gallon cube to come and just researching a big more of cool fish to add! Always thought the vibrant colors of the anthias were pretty awesome! Are they egg layers?

No, they are shoaling fish, they do not pair off and instead breed en masse.

Eww gross! Lol I remember a special on animal planet of shoals mating together and some of the males when laying their sperm would get stuck and then became part of this massive sperm drift wood

You're thinking of a very different fish. I've seen that particular species, can't recall the name. Anthias are scatterers.
