Any PC people get a Mac for X-Mass?

incorrect. There have been 2 virus's written for macs. Its not that people arent smart enough its that no one cares about macs so why try and write a virus for all of about 1000 people in the world that own a mac. I have used macs, unix, linux, windblows, freebsd and Linux is BY FAR better than any other operating system for any type of computer.

Several years ago I converted from years of PC use/repair/maintenance to a Mac and I'll never go back. The conversion was painless and all of the ongoing upkeep hassle disappeared. Now my computer is simply a tool that runs all day and does the jobs I need done. In other words, I went from user and mechanic to just being a user. I have enough hobbies. I don't need keeping my computer running to be a hobby, too.

Is there any way to protect yourself from those viruses, or is it just a super slim chance to catch them? I got a macbook for school about 6 months ago and Im still getting used to everything it can do. I do prefer mac over windows.

The thing I hear a lot is that the mighty mouse is hard to get used to. I never had a huge problem with it, but the shape was just too round to be comfortable. Occasionally I'd get accidental clicks when placing my hand on it, but most of the time it was fine. IMO, get another mouse if you dislike it at all.

The other problem I had/have is finding 3rd party Mac software that I like as much as the apps on the PC side. The pro apps like Adobe CS, Final Cut Studio, etc. are great; some of the options for things like newsgroups and FTP clients are crappy.

As for the viruses out there, don't fill in the prompt for username and password unless you know what you're installing/updating. The Mac viruses discovered so far have needed administrative confirmation, IIRC. When it becomes an issue that requires every Mac user to buy Anti-virus software, it'll be all over the media due to the sensationalism that Macs are virus-proof. For the most part though, it's pretty safe out there.

I hate those Mac mice. I bought a Logitech. Ended that problem.

Don't know about newsgroups, but Fetch works well for me for ftp.

Still debating about getting a Mac laptop. As I dawdle, prices have crept up on the reseller websites, which is making me pause even more. I'm sure I will be just a confused as you are if I get it.

As I fumbled through the first few days I did manage to corrupt the OS bad enough to require a erase and reinstall. I was able to do this with my new MacBook. Something I would have never been able to do with my Windows pc.

Come on Chris!!!!! Do IT do IT!!!! You won't regret it. Gary said it best, I too have given up on the computer forums for Windows, I don't HAVE TO keep the computer running anymore, it is a tool, and now it just works. No more working ON the computer, now I work WITH it.

Well now my worry is the reports of the failures of the 8600 graphics chip from Nvidia. That is pushing me more toward the new MB and away from the older MBP. I know I know, just need to hit the BUY button.

LOL! Honestly I don't have to work on my computer. Just stay away from the file sharing sites, myspace, and other unnamed sites and you'll steer clear of most problems!! LOL!

This is my other issue. I've never really had "problems" with my PCs, so the whole argument that I will avoid this issues is lost on me. However, the audio/video/photo capabilities of Macs seems impressive and I love the size and design of the laptops. I quite possibly may run Windows predominantly on the Mac if I get one, and only switch to OSX when I want to run certain Mac programs.

I have not had any issues Chris, you know how the game goes, if you have something BAD to say, you tell EVERYONE, if you have something GOOD to say you tell your best friend.

I have that same video card in my MBP too.... They may have had a bad batch, but the Apple Store is repairing/replacing the MBP for free if you have the problem. You can always count on top notch service from Apple.
