I recently unearthed a sponge that was hiding under a rock (actually many sponges). Rock never left the water while doing so. This beautiful white sponge appeared and now it seems to be turning pink.

Is light bad for sponges?
Do they change color over time?
Will light change their coloration?

Picture was taken in natural daylight with no lights turned on.

I’m far from a sponge expert but I’ve got those on lots of my rock. Some are in and some are out of the direct light.

I have one that grew around an entire small rock in a shaded part. It’s now bigger than a golf ball. Made me happy to see that.

Do you know what makes them change color? Do they continue to change coloration? I’ve seen sponges in all different colors.

Is that a cotton candy sponge?
No idea. I know very little about them. Now I’m going to google that. But if some beautiful tunicates wanna show up alongside them, I’ll be happy. :D

Remind me to show you a similar one in my tank. It's purple. It happens to be thriving on the side of the tank that gets sunlight. I'm thinking it is photosynthetic.

Cool. I’d like to see that. This is one from my LFS. I’m so jealous.

My purple sponge. I hope it overtakes those palys. Just not my pretty little nems. Lol
