Even manmade Marco rocks look more natural than these imho.

My dog thinks so too.

When it comes in feel for density. My guess is this is heavy and not porous really. Maybe a few pieces could be used. I do not think I would use it, but if you try to use a few pieces, do an acid bath, then rinse and cure to see what happens. JMTC

Now what happens if he cures and and uses it, then down the road it cracks....

I would not doubt it could happen. I personally would not use it, but putting it through all that may give the OP some way to determine if it is worth using.

I used rock like this in my first tank..... what a disaster, it was sold to me as ocean base rock. Turned out to be very heavy lumps of concrete, 8 months down the line it was still leaching phosphate. Rocks turned black with in about 2 months. Took a piece of algea covered rock to my LFS (35 years experience in reefing) and he had never seen nothing like it.

In end I broke down the entire system, cleaned every piece of equipment, sold it all including the tank and stand. Just got that sick of the algea issues I hated the sight of the system in my house.

New system up and running with marco rock, no issues at all! Don't try and save a bit of money, it will cost you more in the long run

What kind of acid? I’ve never done this I’ve always sourced my own rocks from freshwater... I live off the Delaware river and have tributaries every which way... reef rock is becoming a pain... no one has any I can see in person that’s worth the cost they want for 10 lbs of nothing special... I’ve tryd online everyone’s out of pukani like forever apparently... but this crap came in today I yelled at the seller waiting in refund... maybe a few usable real rocks but idk... the darker gray stuff is light and not weird pasty white like plaster... the rest looks like the plaster crap see pics... abut thoughts? Gotta say, that does look bad. I hope you get a refund. I would fight this one. Too bad you are no where near me. I have some dry rock I could give you. Shipping would cost too much though. Sorry.

When I did a bath I did it as such: put rocks in a tall container (I used tall garbage bin). Should be about twice the height of the rock. Cover rock in water (tap is fine). Then pour muriatic acid (from home improvement store) into the water. CAUTION: this stuff is nasty. Where thick, thick rubber gloves, wear eye protection and a mask.
The acid will cause a reaction in the water and with the rock. It will create a foam that rises a lot. Let it do so until it stops rising. Leave maybe an hour or more. Just make sure no-one can get into it. Like kids or animals.
Then, dilute with baking powder. I just get a huge bag from Sam's club or hardware store.
Rinse the rock well with tap water after it is neutralized. I use a hose and power wash it good.
Let dry out.
Cure in large bin for a couple weeks. I do freshwater first then may do saltwater. Sometimes I just double check and add to a sump.
DO THIS OUTSIDE! very caustic stuff.

Have you tried marco rock? or some carib sea rock. Cannot believe they would not have some. I also would suggest live rock if you can swing it. It is a great way to start a tank. Just have to make sure to qt it or at least be ready to get a trap for a mantis shrimp ready. :)

I personally would just buy some name-brand rock. Definitely better to have the peace of mind.

I bought from this guy. The rock is in my tank on my build thread. I like it when I set up my 4 other 10g frag tank I'll buy from him again. Plus as a seller he was willing to work with me on price too.
If you bought the rock from the guy from eBay you need to return it ASAP for a refund. It’s not rock and has been clearly stated. EBAY has also pulled his reef rock items from his store.
TRUST ME, this is concrete.
It might look safe but if that crap chips in your tank, you’re going to have many other problems. It’s a reason why he’s on eBay and not here......

Interestingly though, Nevada could have fossilized coral as at one time it was a shallow sea. i wonder how hard it would be to find, and if it would be any good?

If this guy is out of Nevada, it wouldn't surprise me that this "rock" isn't some kind of slag material left over from processing gypsum. Nevada has some large gypsum mines.

I spoke with him on the phone he said the concrete review is a weirdo lady... he said he harvest it from an old reef bed or something to that extent... he assures that’s it’s real rock ancient coral reef... idk it was 70$ plus 30 shipping I took the risk it’s eBay so it’s it ba I’ll get refunded but he just texted me these pictures on the way to shipping... idk what to think it looks good and he threw in a lot of extra stuff cause it turned out we know people in common... not that makes it any less or a chance to be a scam esq situation... nothing to do now but wait and see... some of it looks really good... imho... thoughts? Anyone in Vegas know of a quarry or rock salvage type place? Not store like an actual place to “hunt” stone...
Looks like concrete to me. Too many flat surfaces. Too many negatives.
