While I'm here drooling at Paul's attic find, figured I'd share a quick little project for my son-in-law. He's federal law enforcement and apparently there is something called challenge coins. Anyway, he wanted a little display rack for them and this is what I came up with. Made with some leftover cherry I had.

Also a shallow shadowbox made with the same cherry, with oak splines. Hard to tell in the picture but it looks pretty sharp with the contrasting colors. Well, at least I think so. :)

Looks great. Also a thing in the military. Some use similar things to hold them, others use their shadow box. Then there are people like me who have them tucked away not knowing what to do with them :) I'll probably put mine in a shadow box one day (once I get around to attempt to make one).

Look in to Shou Sugi Ban link a Japanese style of preserving wood. This style would look really cool. I saw Chip & Joanne do this to a house boat build.

It's a pretty neat look when it's done correctly. I actually tried it on a small piece of oak I had using a propane torch. Let's just say you're going to need something a little stronger!!!!

How are the fences?

Fences are second to none. Very similar to the Biesemeyer fences sold for other machines. I would love to get one of their sliding tables instead of using a cutoff sled. Much safer for the kiddos and these things are burly.

It is wood, right? How hard can that be to fit in a wine, barney looking country theme or rustic look to blend in with a kitchen / great room flow that is heavy grey, white, and built in cabinets it will be near....

Some of you wood workers though - made skills :) My brother and sister in law just bought me a lathe :) Took a beginning turning class two weeks ago. Pretty fun I have to say.

A lathe is on my wish list. I was using a old ShopSmith for a lathe and have my eye on a jet lathe.;)

I have been putting in this "electric" fireplace. We moved to a Condo and I am not allowed to put in a real one. Besides I have no chimney. My last home had a real fireplace but I have to live with what I now have.

All I have left to do on this is install the stone hearth at the bottom which will open on hydraulics for storage. (really electric lifts)

The wall is 1/8th" steel plates. I ground them to have those swirls. The black thing at the bottom is the TV sound bar




It started like this. The entire thing is also on wheels so I can move it away from the wall for maintenance, painting and when I hide from my wife.


I cut the steel with an electric sheers as a tin snips won't cut it.



The mantel is 8 2X8s glued together and "hollowed" out to fit on the fireplace.


The "Stovepipe was from a copper gutter.


I bent it round and held it in place with these.

I LOVE your radial arm saw!! In my tiny shop I had to settle with just a table saw and circular saw, lol.

I got that radial arm saw about 35 years ago in a garage sale. I think I paid $125.00 for it. It's a Craftsman and I think at the time it was $1,200.00 I use it almost every day and have my vacuum hooked up to it.

Does it have positive stops (or a latching mechanism) for different angle positions? In the photo it appears to be rotated off to the side, which is why I am curious :). Or else it would be a real pain to get a square cut

Yes, it has positive stops for different angles. It is off to the side so I had room for the mantle. I was just using it for a table there to glue the 2 X 8s together.
