Anyone Regret Getting Jawfish

Iv always liked a yellowhead Jawfish and finally have the opportunity to get one now the question is those of you who had one did you ever regret putting one your tank?

i have a dusky jawfish. he is by far the most interesting and personable fish i have!! ive probably had him for around 5-6 years. my tank wouldnt be the same without him! i dont know how they compare to the yellowhead though

No , but I was ticked off because I didn’t have a net around the tank . It jumped out and I didn’t find it til the morning .

Would love to have a jawfish species only tank one day. Has anyone kept pairs of them before? Specifically, the blue dotted species.

I heard they do good in macro algae tank and also with colder temps.

I have a 34g red sea and even my pistol and watchman make having frags on the sanded difficult at best. It seems like may thing on the sand bed they view as a personal attack and go out of their way to bury it.

Around their burrows they make a mess. But their not like a diamond goby that picks up sand and swims around tank dropping sand everywhere. They will close their burrow up with shells and little rocks at night and then open back up. They are entertaining but any coral down low near their burrow will get sand on it.

yes, mine builds up the sand around his burrow. i dont really call it a mess. its just his habitat. every once in a while, he spits out a mouth full of sand from inside his cave but its not like hes going around blasting sand everywhere. but if there are scattered shells or small frags anywhere nearby they will get used for a wall or something ! i love it though. but be warned that you wont be able to have small fish. like the little neon gobys

had a blue spot and he was amazing. one of my favorite fish! when my new build is up and running i am going to try and find a pair of pearl jawfish for it.

They are well worth it for their personality. They only mess with items around the vicinity of their burrows. A lid is a must!!! Mines died from carpet surfing (even with a lid, the gaps were enough for them to slip thru).

I lost my blue spot many years ago to carpet surfing as well…

Are you familiar with DIY clear mesh screen lid construction?

I had a pearly aka yellow head. Fun little fish with plenty of antics centered around its lair. Very determined to keep the lair opening they had even when I tried to block it off in an attempt to make them dig elsewhere due to dumping sand all over my Micromussa in one instance. But as others have noted, not like a diamond goby where the whole tank turns into the Sahara . Also the pearly is fine in mid to upper 70s water temp. It’s the blue spot that likes it chillier at 68 degrees or so.

Zero regrets. They are so much fun to watch!

I have had a yellow head in the past and they are really fun to watch. They will find a way out if you're not ultra careful. I had a glass top on the tank at the time and it found a seam between glass panels to ended up on the carpet. It was a short tank though so maybe best to have something 20" tall or more. They generally don't venture up too high in the water column.

Do you recall how much of a mess they made on the sand bed ?

I had my blue spot in a 30gal cube with clams on the sand bed and had no issues

No mess, just a small pile of sand by its burrow.
