Anyone try bringing fish back from Hawaii?

Based on the Hawaiian Division of Natural Resources fishing regulations FAQ, you can recreationally collect fish for your own home aquarium and even fly back home with them, assuming your home state allows it. Has anyone actually tried this recently?

The airlines are annoying and often don't follow their own rules. I would contact the airline you are using and probably try to get info to print off from them and so on... whoever is working that day may try to dictate the rules.

Reading your link, you are limited to a 3ft hand scoop net similar to an aquarium net.

CASTING Throw nets are prohibited.

Trust me, you ain't catching much with a hand net with 3ft or less handle

All Tangs, triggers, etc are lightning FAST and the only way to catch them is with a large CASTING NET of 6ft diameteror larger

Haha yeah I saw that.

I was thinking of having a LFS packaged and put in a styrofoam box.

Granted it's hard to catch the fish in the first place.

The only LFS in Hawaii I know of is Coral Fish Hawaii in Oahu which I checked out in person last year. They had an awesome marine and freshwater selection and even aquacultured live rock from Molokai (like Floridian rock). I wish we had some of that stuff in the mainland :(.

Yeah, I know it's hard. I may not catch anything, but I'd like to try. I scuba so figure I could try to corner it. I've also seen baby tangs in tide pools

I've caught tangs in both Hawaii and Puerto Rico with a hand net while snorkeling. Get a net made of clear acrylic.

My buddy caught a humma trigger in Tahiti with hook and line...he's pretty good at micro fishing . Hook caught sheepshead minnow.

Any updates on this topic. I’m traveling to Hawaii in august with my family and it’s always been a dream of mine to catch my own aquarium fish and bring home. Has anyone been to Hawaii lately and tried to bring fish back home.
