Last year I had to crawl under my tank which is under the stairs in a long skinny closet. I forgot what I was looking for but as I was squeezed into that tight place and started to back out. I hit the 3/4" valve on the bottom of my skimmer completely breaking it off. My 5' tall DIY skimmer is a HOB so it is just hanging on the back of the 100 gallon tank. Water was shooting out of the broken valve extreamly fast. I was not in a position to do much so I stuck my finger in the hole. No one was home and I had nothing near me to stick in the hole to stop the water. The tank was emptying on my carpet in my finished basement. I saw a bucket and was able to reach it with my foot. I dragged it over and put it under the valve and removed my finger and ran to my workshop to get a stick to plug up the hole. It worked fairly well and allowed me to stop the pump feeding the skimmer. I lost about 10 gallons of water on my rug.
You can see the valve on the bottom of the skimmer here
