Hey guys, i have owned my mini reef 120 for about 4 months now(my old tank cracked) so transferred everything over and thankfully all running smoothly.. I was just curious about what you guys think of the protein skimmer, it’s a Aqua one G216 protein skimmer… I have been told to throw it in the bin and upgrade so before I spend some $$ I wanted to know everyone’s opinion.. i feel it’s been okay but I wouldn’t say I’m advanced enough to know what a good skimmer is because this is my first sump setup tank where as before I just had filter and hang on back skimmer…

The first thing is to figure out what you have to work with for dimensions so you can look at comparable skimmers that will fit. Reef Octopus is a popular brand, but there are many others to choose from as well.

Sorry for late reply, so I have dimensions of the sump and the chambers

sump
52cm width(side to side)
32cm length/depth(front of sump to back)

chambers
20cm width(first chamber)
18cm width(second chamber)

i also have taken some photos of the sump setup. If any tips that would be great(if my sump is Setup okay) as this is my first sump tank.

I am sorry but I was replying to the dassarassa. We have those skimmers in the states there are people who like them but not the best skimmer out there.
A few types that are good
1. Simplicity skimmers.

I have a mini reef 180 that I bought used and decided never to use the aqua one skimmer that came with it, I bought the Bubble Magus C3.5 and its a great skimmer...

Beware of the dimensions though. I bought it because it would fit in the small side chamber of the sump designed for a skimmer as the base dimensions of the C3.5 were listed as 5mm narrower than the space... what no-one tells you though is that the skimmer gets slightly wider half way up! This means I now have it in the main section of the sump intended for a refugium. Not a major issue for me as I don't use a refugium but just something to note when looking at dimensions...

I'd probably turn the air up to max and set the water level at the lowest point. If it's adjustable at all.
Than work the water level up a little. Maybe quarter turn at a time. Let it skim their a day and adjust up. See how it works out you.
Yes though, those are old skimmers. With the two red knobs. Haven't seen one in awhile.

It's not a particularly good skimmer, but would suffice for a while.

When I had that tank back in 2015, I replaced that skimmer with a Coral Box D300, which I still use today on a Reefsys 326.
