Are there any alternatives for a saltinity tester.

Are there any alternatives to a salt tester, is there another way to test or work out your saltinity. This is acctally for a brackish aquarium with a betta in it. I put 1 tablespoon of salt in, the tanks 3 gallons. I want the saltinity to be at about 1.002, there's a chance I may increase that. Is there another way to test work out saltinity? Thanks!

Refractometer, or hydrometer is your best bet....

Or simply math, if 35ppt is 33.5 grams in 1 liter of liquid.....and 35ppt is 1.026 in sg.......

But, does it really matter, if you dont aim for specific number..... Btw, i think that for brackish freshwater different salt is used than in reef tank?

Why brackish for a betta if I may ask?
When I needed to treat for ich in my 36 gallon, 30 tsp of table salt brought it to 3 ppm roughly.
I don’t see a reason not to use a hydrometer or refractometer, but the only other way I can think of is math.

Edit to what I previously said, 1 tsp per gallon is to 1 ppm I think, so 3 tsp to 3 ppm.
I don’t advise keeping betta splendens in salt though, unless it’s evolved for brackish it isn’t good long term.

I really wouldn’t recommend trying this. Betta splendens come from rice paddies certainly not estuarys. What’s the point, it just seems like an unethical risk doesnt it?

they come from areas with soft water and a lower PH, I don't think it's going to do well in brackish water. I'm willing to bet it ends up with kidney problems and a severely shortened lifespan..

It is 3 years old now, its lived in fresh water its whole life until now

If weird things start happening it will be too late. The only betta I know of that lives in brackish water is betta mahachaiensis. I agree that it's not ethical to keep your betta in a brackish aquarium.

I'll keep him in brackish for 1 or 2 months to be safe. Or even less if 1 or 2 months is a risk? I could lower my saltinity even more.

No, betta splendens should not be kept in brackish water, period. Why would you want to do that to the fish?

But why take the risk? What do you gain from doing this? If he’s 3 years old and healthy in FW I’d keep doing what your doing :) no need to change anything. captive bred bettas have bad genetics and any deviations from their preferred conditions could (will) have devastating consequences

He was the 1st fish I got out of 24, he's the one who brought me into this amazing hobby. The last thing I want to do is kill him. Anyway I need to go do some water changes!

He was the 1st fish I got out of 24, he's the one who brought me into this amazing hobby. The last thing I want to do is kill him. Anyway I need to go do some water changes!

If its reef salt then at least you have extra! (just keep it as sealed as you can, any moisture will muck it up) And if it's normal aquarium salt then it's good to have in case of Ich, fungal infections, and parasites
