Anyone have any asterina starfish to give? I recently acquired a 12+ year old 30g tank which the owners thought it was a 50g but either way they had some in the tank and I have yet to see any now that I’ve had it setup for a month. I think I may have killed them off in the move and they were so cute!! Would love any extra if they have it

Cute is an adjective I would not use for Asterina starfish. In 55 years of reefing, I have had them in plague proportions. My biggest issue with them is their grazing on ornamental red macro algae: Bortacladia & Gracilaria Parvispora (Red Ogo).

Many use Harlequin shrimp as a control predator. I am not sure what eat mine.

Where are you located? I doubt that anyone would want to pay shipping cost.

They can get out of controll, and the ongoing debate if they are actually "reef safe".....one thing is for sure, people love them. Pretty much all non hobbyist are fascinated by the lil guys and is almost guaranteed to get a positive comment and spark some interest in the hobby...then the questions start...

I see this is your first thread and your second post on r2r. Welcome to the addiction.

What else is in your 30G captive reef?

i recently just added my first coral. A Duncan, bpa, zoa, zenia. The tank came with one orange and one black clownfish and a tiger watchmen goby with 3 peppermint shrimp and some other invertebrates. Thank you I’ve always wanted a saltwater tank and it being 50$ with everything included was crazy to pass up. Came from an older couple moving and just wanted everything to go to a good home. All old equipment but I’ve upgraded a few things so far

Good to know I’ve been reading up on them about if they were ok with corals and some forums say yes while others say no. Funny enough I’ve seen 2 today already. Just recently added coral so I guess we’ll see and I prob won’t add any extra

Cute until they start eating the expensive new zoa polyps.

In reef tanks we have mainly Asterina and Aquilonastra starfish. Some of them are known to eat zoanthids. If you are planning to keep zoas or palythoas I would advice against purposefully adding any of these little guys.
