great thread thus far....not to hijack or anything but i have a aptasia free tank due to starting with marco rock but i aquired a clam and it has 2 of them on the side of the shell rite next to the mantle....any ideas what to do with out hurting the clam????
my last ank i had a few and i found the only way i could rid them was pull the rock and superglue the crap out of them or hit that area with a blow torch and fry them suckers..they never seemed to come back lol...

If you only have a couple, cover them with Joe's Juice or kalk paste. They will be gone, and won't hurt the clam.

For a large infestation bergia nudibranches are the best solution....fish and shrimp are hit and miss (it comes down to where they were caught, blah blah blah), but bergia nudis will do the trick as they only eat anenomes. They have fixed infestations in my tank. The thing is, at first they don't seem to be doing anything because a few small bergias won't eat a lot of anenomes, however over the course of a few months you will find all of them gone as they reproduce in your tank, which they have done for me on every occasion that I have used them. Good luck, I know these problems can be so frustrating.

X3 on the Copper Band. They will eat the small dusters first, then start on the Aptasia. You may have to not feed for a couple of days, but every one I have had cleaned house.

2 peppermint shrimp in my tank kept them at bay.

Aiptasia are one of the pests that can ruin the fun of this hobby. Honestly, I would remove all of the rock, and set it outside in the sun to bake for about two months (literally). I also would remove all of the sand and huck it in the trash bin. I have seen mini-aiptasia perfectily happy sprouting up in large numbers in other peoples' tanks. In essence, sterilize your system (don't forget to look inside your overflow chamber-I've seen massive colonies of aiptasia inside those blacked-out areas, too). Yes, it will be very much like starting over, but IMHO worth the sacrifice. Cycling the tank through dinoflagellates, cyano-bacteria, and diatoms for another six to eighteen months will seem like a cakewalk compared to the constant irritation and unsightly looking brown demons!

wach out for those file fish!! they eat acans and favias and trumpets and cynarina and scollys and and and and and .......the reason they eat aiptasia is they will eat pretty much any coral...

I use a Copperband and It the only thing that works for me . It will hunt every last one of them down. You don't have to feed the copper band it eats the issue away . It will also eat feather dusters though.

Bergias feed at night and hide through the day.....I have used them with all sorts of wrasses and other "wrasse-like" fish with no problems. Fish that I have used them with include: mystery wrasse, peppermint hogfish, african radiant wrasse, candy hogfish, basslets, anthias, .....

So I used the lye method last night to treat 7 pesty aptasia that had been hit multiple times prior with kalk paste and continued to come back.

Let's just say that this lye mixture just melted the aptasia before my very eyes! You don't need much to do the job! I used the narrow syringe that comes with the Salifert test kits for the reagent ... it worked great!
