Yeah I know you can use pretty much anything. Atm I use a brute can but was thinking of changing it out to be more compact I guess.

Those are good, but if you want a small footprint high volume container for cheap, I don't think slimjim trash cans can be beat. I used these on both my systems, great peace of mind especially for traveling.

Just be careful that some totes are not that strong and bow out in the middle when filled with water. I have some that did that. If you can fit it, Brute cans are good choices.

this is a good point, in the case of slim jim trashcans, you can use a nylon strap or build a frame to curtail the issue, or just don't fill them quite so much.

Is there any concern over some of these plastics leaching unwanted substances into the water? I've been looking into polycarbonate containers, but it might be a lot easier and cheaper if I could expand my list of acceptable materials.

I've looked at these specific totes and they appear to be perfect for holding water. Created smaller ponds using the typical 27g Steralite of thinner wall material found at Loews and Home Deport and that worked fine without bowing.

Plastics can leach chemicals such as tin or zinc or organic plasticizers and other components. Unfortunately, there's no way to know in advance which plastics do what, except by hearing what problems folks have had, nor is there a good alternative to plastics for many purposes.

Yeah I use brute cans for my mixing and storing Rodi and I use one for this ato which is for my 90 gallon. Might just stick with it for the sake of it’s not broken don’t fix it.

Would ICP reveal those issues quickly or something that leeches out over time. I ask because that found at an LFS made of plastic that I’ve seen don’t come with lab certification to confirm they won’t leech that not wanted.

I don't know how quick it is to reach detectable levels.

When I went to a ReefMat, I also went with then entire Red Sea ATO setup including their 10 gallon slim reservoir. They’re not cheap, but the way they have it all set up made putting it all together really easy.
