About a 2 months ago i started to think how i can make my 180 gallon aquarium easier to maintain, filter socks were becoming a real pain, every 2 days take out old, replace, then clean, let dry. then all over again the next week. So i decided to come up with a way not to have to deal with the dreaded filter sock and came up with a roller filter that will be automatic.Put it together { took me three days to design and two days to build } installed on my tank and the results were unreal. I never would have realized how much the filter sock was letting get passed the fabric and these are 200 micron socks. the amount of stuff that my roller filter collects after every 12 hours is insane. My weekly chores on my tank have now become almost nothing except checking my water chemistry . i can finally enjoy looking at my tank instead of working on it.:):)

Amazing build. Can you share more pics and build videos? Also, what material are you using? What rolling pump? The branded one costs a bomb..

Thanks KJ, Im new to any reefing forums, I thought that this filter should have some attention, At the moment i am currently building a whole new sump with a new design of the roller filter. the one currently running is well above all my expectations. I will never use a nasty filter sock again:)

Thank you nanomania, There will be more videos on the filter system, currently working on a new sump and roller filter design that will also hold marine pure blocks under the filter for maximizing all the space in the sump. I am using acrylic for the box and the motor to turn the filter i bought at my local pool supply wharehouse, timer i bought at walmart.

I have seen videos on theilings roller filter, the only problem with theilings is it is rated at max 600 gallon an hour. The filter i have designed can handle 1650 gallons per hour. i have tested this and a video on youtube at rays reefing. I have installed this filter on a 350 gallon saltwater tank that the pump rated at 1525 gallon per hour with no issues. also for everyone to know is there is no smell coming from the used filter as it stays damp. I have been running this on my 180 tank now for a little over a month now with no issues and still have half a roll still to go. i will never use a filter sock again.:):)

What paper are you using and how are you making it so particulate doesnt just go around the paper? I would love to see this in more detail.

The paper is fleece paper, the water weight holds the paper down on the smooth edge of the acrylic and the egg crate. here is the build video.

Thanks for this. I haven't worked with acrylic much but I might give this a try on my next build.

Nice build, how did it cost u to make 1? Whats the name of the pump used?
The acrylic was the most cost at 130.00 , The pump is the jebao 12000 , I have to say is very quiet and has more flow than i will ever need. I had 4 pumps on my 180 gallon and now just the jebao doing all the same stuff, time will tell on the pump at the moment [ fingers crossed] . so far with this whole new sump and roller filter all is working better than can be imagined . there will be a new video on the roller filter vs filter sock, this you have to see .:):):)

I bought the fleece paper from amazon, the specs on micron i do not know, the filter socks i used were 200 micron, this filter paper is tighter than that and thats what i like better, even the smallest particulate wont go through but water will? As far as shipping goes , you got me there, something could be worked out someway , [never say cant be done] . do you have amazon in India? if not let me know. Thanks, Ray.
