real simple and honest. She needs you so be honest and tell her you each clean up after yourself as she is no longer company to entertain but a friend who helps out. And 50 is not old it is young and the new 40. Wait until you are 60 and someone calls you old even though you don't feel a day over 40.

... And 70 is the new 45!!! Lord knows what 80 will be like.

So, wife finally let her have it. She brought a pot (with dirt) inside to show us this plant and put the pot (with dirt) right on the back of a chair. Wife feels bad, but there's only so much you can take.

What happened? Did she realize that she was a slob? Sometimes it just takes an intervention. But if she is like my gf, she is blind to the dirt she makes. Really totally unaware even when shown the mess she makes.

My wife pointed out to her that she was getting dirt all over the back of our chair with this dirty pot. She wasn't rude, but firm. It was awkward after that and the neighbor lady didn't say much. Probably won't see her for a few days, but I'm sure she'll get over it.

She could very possibly be undiagnosed Autism what used to be know as Aspergers. My son is Autistic and it sounds like she is very lacking on recognizing social ques.

Last thought, who is the child? Who is the parent, who is the adult. Your neighbor is behaving like a child and thus so need to be treated so. Ask yourself what you would do with a bad child that wants to be rescued? good reading https://www.amazon.com/Games-People-Play-Transactional-Analysis/dp/0345410033. ;)

That sounds interesting! I always enjoyed the 'people of the lie' and the 'road less travelled' books.

You say she doesn't have cable? Sounds like that's the reason she comes over mostly? So couple that with being messy while eating and it sounds like something is going on, whether it's a spectrum thing or she doesn't care.. Like others said, how much are you willing to give?

I'm all for being polite to people, but if they continue to encroach on personal territory, etc, then that's on them. It's like the no shoes on the rug. If you have to respect that, and she gets testy about it, be the same way while eating. Don't be afraid to do it, it's your house. All you're doing is giving her the same respect she gave you, at her house, concerning her carpet.

That's the language she speaks from what it sounds like. Just do the same in turn, and I'm sure she'll understand.

This reminds me of when I was younger. We had a guy living next door. Daughter long gone, wife passed years ago, pretty old guy. I believe his favorite activities was 7 and 7 and watching tv.
Anyways, the guy would wander around our block, walking through yards, etc.. Sometimes you might close the curtains because he would be there staring in lol... Not creepily I don't think, but old guy bored as hell.
One day he came over and was knocking on the door. I almost didn't answer it because I was so tired of him. I mean, it was just beyond annoying. (and I was still a young punk)
Anyways, I answered the door. He was all dirty, and started saying something, I think he was kinda drunk, but I was able to make out, "help me, my house is burning". :|
Yup, sure enough, he started a fire in the kitchen, the house was burning. Called 911, didn't lose the house but the kitchen needed a remodel. After that I believe his daughter put him in a home.

Anyways, even when you find yourself completely fed up with someone, don't hold onto that, because that could be the last thing you ever do to/for that person.
But the above lesson doesn't have anything to do with being or not being, blunt as hell. :)

Though I've never met her and only know her habits through what you've posted, I have a close friend with Aspergers that sounds very similar. At first, you think he's perfectly normal socially, and then he somehow manages to get on your very last nerve in 2 minutes flat. It's impressive, but it's not on purpose. Very intelligent and helpful, would give you the last slice of bread if you needed it, but completely unaware of why one thing is ok to tease about and another is taboo.
It seems to crush him when I point out how he's hurt my feelings, but he'll usually spring back quickly.
I know you've had lots of great suggestions here and there was the planted pot incident that might have already helped resolve part of the issue, but have you considered eating at the table and then moving to the couch for tv with coffee or a non messy after dinner item? Another possible alternative, she still comes over for the occasional dinner, but you could transfer the shows she wants to watch to a portable device for her. I realize of course that you would probably need to purchase said device and/or storage media for it.

On a completely separate note, I'd like to thank you for all the great write ups on disease and quarantine while I'm here. I'm on my third successful quarantine as we speak :)

Shortest distance between two points is a straight line. When we correct our children's behavior we do it in love (hopefully) and not in anger even if were frustrated. Sometimes feelings get hurt but it doesn't mean you don't correct. If she's as lonely as you say she is she won't be inclined to blow you off so quickly especially when she appears needy.

Become Very Busy... "Hey I'd love to visit but we are right in the middle of something".

I have lived in my current home for 7 years and have not had any of my neighbors in.

Good for your wife being upfront and firm! You guys are very nice it sounds like to this women, so hopefully she will realize now!
