I have grown a many of them out, as long as there is the stub of a skeleton there.

Well it must have been because the bottom of it just snapped off like a twig. Very clean break.

Thats a good thing. I will do that to mine sometimes to be able to place them on plugs or just glue to the rocks and grow them out. When the stalks are thin, easy to do that and all be fine.
