Hello all! Long time lurker, first thread. Bit of background.... born and raised in Amityville New York, moved down to kissimmee florida in October of 2015. Bought a house and am just now getting back into it. New baby on the way and wife probably going for her masters after so perfect timing right? Hehe. Anywho so I picked up a 40B from a guy via Facebook for 30$. Brand new with cardboard still on the ends! Have always loved these tanks and had one before as well. I also have an old braceless 6 ft 125 I was thinking about setting up but I felt that with everything going on right now I'd be better off setting up something a little bit smaller for the time being. Kept all of my old equipment so I have what I need for a 40B already. Thinking I wanna go primarily SPS. Here is what I have/ would like to have:

Tank: 40 breeder

Light: current sunpod 150w mh, 4 t5, + moonlights (thinking about grabbing a 32" mars aqua led)

Sump: don't have one yet, tried for two at the auctions at RAP this year but didn't get either. Will likely buy one of the windridercreations 36x15x15 refugium kits.

Overflow: will likely buy a modular marine 1200gph overflow kit and set up a beananimal (wife says tank is a great idea but it NEEDS to not make her want to pee her pants)

Return: tunze 1072.20

Skimmer: RO nwb110 with bb hy200s and 2 2" neck extensions.

Powerheads: 2 x mp10w es also have some korallias I may blow across the back.

I also have a brs dual reactor that I may run, not sure yet

Won 50lbs of Billy's reef connection rock at rap and have a couple of pieces of love rock in a 20 gallon aio that is currently up and running. Was trying to come up with a nice scape with the rock for about 2 hours with my daughter the other day, my wife came out and made this in about 5 minutes

So gonna go with that lol

Building the stand now got the frame set up, just filled in gaps and then need to prime frame, poly bottom and caulk seams. The I will skin.

Stand is a lot bigger than the tank but was designed that way, will have space on the side and behind for powerheads and plumbing and will be viewable from front and right side. Will end up putting some kind of ledge around the entire thing as well and will likely have some kind of magnetically attached doors. Other than that my wife is choosing everything about the colors and look of the stand.

Also got my brs 5 stage plus RODI set up and even after 2 years in storage it is still producing 0 tds water from my well. Due to the fact that I am on a well I may end up upgrading it with a water saver dual membrane kit to try and make sure I don't collapse the dang well. From everything I've read and asked on various forums it should not be nescessary but I am paranoid as hell about having to replace the well if I collapse it lol.

Well, that's where I'm at right now, waiting for wood filler to dry and will sand and prime tommorrow night. Will post again soon!

Got rear and side wall on stand, these will not be removable as it is going into a corner, front and other side will be attached with magnets after skinning for maximum space(and so I don't have to kill myself getting two sets of doors plumb lol). Even had a little help lol

Also got the sump figured out, a guy about an hour away was selling an icecap 36 sump for 150$! Had to grab that, so now the sump for my 36x18x16 tank will be 36x18x16 lol. Not the xl model so it doesn't have a fuge, thinking I have room in stand to add a remote if I need, not sure yet

Made a decision on the overflow, ended up ordering a modular marine 1200 low profile with removable weir, and paid 15$ to upgrade the size of the external box to take 1" bulkheads instead of the 3/4" uniseals. Looking forward to getting that in.

Got stand skinned and the modular marine overflow as well as the return installed, gotta admit that the overflow is gorgeous and worth every penny I paid. Still need to build door for the stand and the top half of it (hood integrated into stand). Getting there, moving slowly and trying to do it right

Nice job on the stand. I built my 40 breeder stand 20"x60" in order to have enough room for an ATO container and an electronics section. I was so glad I did that. I'm sure you will like the extra space.

Nice, yeah that's exactly why I did it, plus trying to make it look more like furniture than just a tank stand

how the tank going?
any updates om the MM overflow box? I am thinking of doing the same. may I ask why you ended up going with the 1200 vrs the 800?

Sorry it’s been so long, gonna start working on it again, little one is set to arrive today via section and will be off the next two weeks so I (hopefully) will be adding water sometime before the holidays. I went with the 1200 for the simple fact that the tank cost me 30$ and if/when I upgrade I will literally toss the tank and just re use the overflow on the new build. I also just ordered a reefbreeders photon 24 v2 that I am going to use. Seemed like a really nice light and a good compromise between the cheaper black box leds and the much more expensive lights. Plus it was on sale for 350 which I liked lol

Ok so baby is born I have two weeks to try and rock the finishing touches out. Need to finish the top/hood portion of the stand, got a reefbreeders 24” photon v2 in this past Monday. Light looks awesome and have heard nothing but good things. Bit better quality than a straight black box and it has a 2 year warranty which sold me. Got new media for the RODI coming from brs (plus a mr chili decal for the corner of the tank, and I think I’ll put the r2r sticker I got at reefapalooza this year on there too). Have dark limo tinting going on the back and left side. Will probably try to really get into it this weekend once my wife has had a chance to heal a little bit more (baby was born this past Friday)

Congrats on the new little one! Looking forward to seeing some updates to this system too, but I know a new family member certainly takes priority. :)

Ok so I got the stand stained/antiqued? And poly’d. Still need to do top and bottom trim molding and build the door, but I can add that stuff easy enough. Change of plans too, going to ditch the attached hood idea and go with old school looking metal hangers for the lights. Will at some point cover up the holes where the hood was supposed to cover with some kind of removable plates I’m thinking.

Thanks man! Yeah honestly I can’t help too much with the baby as the wife is nursing, but I do try to get up and change her before I give her to momma. Plus I have been trying to do all the normal stuff with our other two daughters that she normally does

Got some more done, tank is plumbed, top trim on (will add bottom trim later), and got my scape in place.
