We have two bangai and four pyjama cardinals, and the two bangais had their gobs open super wide. Not long after one of them closed their mouth but the others is still open. Would that mean both of the bangais are male and could they have mates with the pyjamas?

The Banggai's mouth is stuck open like in the picture? Sounds like distended mouth.

Here is some good info on sexing Banggai's: https://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/how-to-determine-the-sex-of-banggai-cardinalfish
Some more photos for reference: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/sexing-banggai-cardinalfish.358183/ I'm about to be raising the fry of these two, my suspicions were correct as to sex.

Distended Mouth -Locked open

This is a condition that can be caused by a physical trauma or if the fish bites (or comes into contact with) a stinging coral. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for this. It will either self-correct or it won’t.

Doesnt look like distended mouth but I won’t rule it out yet as it’s mouth appears empty. Thought I might have just missed the egg transfer. Going to keep a close eye on them for now. Attached a few pics of them. When we feed them in the morning I’ll see if I can see the vents on the closed mouth one

Good news! Banggai has now closed its mouth and is back to normal... but staying far from the corals. Hopefully he has learnt his lesson
